Summary: A man can receive nothing except it be given him from heaven (St John 3:27)
According to the book of Job Job was a very affluent man. Affluent means wealthy. But he was also a man who continually glorified God. Nowadays people who are affluent may tell you that success comes through determination and hard work, and I guess there are times when Christians may say, or at least think, that too. But the Bible tells us that a man can receive nothing except it be given him from heaven : Saint John 3:27. Since time began no human has achieved or acquired anything that God Almighty has not put well within their reach. In other words everything is directed by providence. Psalm 127, Ecclesiastes 3 and Ecclesiastes 9 confirm that everything is directed by providence. I say : What destiny withholds is sought after in vain, and what destiny demands cannot be long avoided. The past is accepted, the present is struggled against and the future is anticipated. But the future when it comes will be just another present, and that present when it has gone will be just another past. Therefore let us thank God for his goodness toward us and continue to give him the glory.
The Penguin Dictionary of Proverbs says : There's a divinity that shapes our ends, rough hew them how we will. Fortune, not prudence, rules the lives of men. Fortune favours those who use their judgement. Lucky men need no counsel. A little wit will serve a fortunate man.
