2 Timothy 4:3-4 (Amplified Bible)

For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying], they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold,

And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions.

But as for you, continue to hold to the things that you have learned and of which you are convinced, knowing from whom you learned [them],

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Men will not put up with sound doctrine

"For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction,"

Sound means well, uncorrupt, wholesome. Doctrine means instruction, learning, teaching.

Ezekiel 12:2 (Amplified Bible)

Son of man, you dwell in the midst of the house of the rebellious, who have eyes to see and see not, who have ears to hear and hear not, for they are a rebellious house.

They lack spiritual insight. Yes, they have all the organs that can appreciate and accommodate physical things they can see, but can't be used with spiritual things which are invisible to them.

Jeremiah 6:10 (Amplified Bible)

To whom shall I [Jeremiah] speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised [never brought into covenant with God or consecrated to His service], and they cannot hear or obey. Behold, the word of the Lord has become to them a reproach and the object of their scorn; they have no delight in it.

Isaiah 6:10 (Amplified Bible)

Make the heart of this people fat; and make their ears heavy and shut their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn again and be healed.

GOD promises if we see and appreciate Him, He will heal us. We need to come by faith to Him not our physical senses.

Hebrews 11:6 (Amplified Bible)

But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].

To receive from GOD is still by faith.

B. Evil desires followed

"but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying],"

1 Corinthians 10:6 (Amplified Bible)

Now these things are examples (warnings and admonitions) for us not to desire or crave or covet or lust after evil and carnal things as they did.

When it is evil desires coming from humans, it's called "lust after" but if coming from GOD, it's a stretching out after, reaching forth. It all means that when we fall into our own evil desires, it's just lust not real want or love, but when the desire came from GOD, it allows us to stretch forth, meaning to upgrade, or to better oneself just to reach that desire.

Ephesians 2:3 (Amplified Bible)

Among these we as well as you once lived and conducted ourselves in the passions of our flesh [our behavior governed by our corrupt and sensual nature], obeying the impulses of the flesh and the thoughts of the mind [our cravings dictated by our senses and our dark imaginings]. We were then by nature children of [God’s] wrath and heirs of [His] indignation, like the rest of mankind.
