TEXT

“Thy kingdom come”

INTRODUCTION

Some countries are called kingdoms e.g. the United Kingdom. Other countries are kingdoms but are not called such e.g. Belgium, Denmark and Saudi Arabia to name but a few. A kingdom has a monarch ruling over it. The LORD rules over the kingdom of God. It is an invisible kingdom. Jesus said “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:20).

“Thy kingdom come” is:

1. A PRAYER FOR THE CRUSHING OF SATAN

When we pray for the overthrow of the devil’s work we are, in effect, praying “thy kingdom come”. Satan opposes the gospel. Nobody attends church as faithfully as he does. Wherever the gospel is preached he will be there to steal away the good seed. We must pray against “spiritual wickedness in high places”.

Numbers 10:35 "And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee".

2. A PRAYER FOR THE CONVERSION OF SINNERS

When we pray for souls to be saved we are praying “thy kingdom come”. We who are saved have been brought into the kingdom of God (Colossians 1:13) and we want others to experience the same. Christ prayed for the conversion of sinners in John 17:20 "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word". Paul prayed for the conversion of sinners in Romans 10:1 "Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved".

3. A PRAYER FOR THE COMING OF THE SAVIOUR

When we pray for the second coming of Christ we are praying “thy kingdom come”. How often do you pray for His return? To do so is scriptural. Let us say with the apostle John in Revelation 22:20 – “Even so come, Lord Jesus”.

CONCLUSION

This prayer will one day be answered fully - "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever" (Revelation 11:15).

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun

Doth his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,

Till moons shall wax and wane no more.
