Summary: The Third commandment is talking about the Name of God. Not to use in vain.
Third Commandment
Exodus 20:7
Introduction: This third command talks about the name of the Lord which great identity. It reflects the Characters, it reminds the personality, it brings the deeds of a person. Names are associated with events. A personal name identifies a specific unique and identifiable individual person, has a philosophical is a proper noun. in ancient near-east (Israel, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia) names were thought to be extremely powerful and to act. A change of name indicates a change of status. Abram and his wife Sarai were renamed "Abraham" and "Sarah (Gen 17:4, 17:15). Simon was renamed Peter ( Matt 16). Throughout the Bible, characters are given names at birth that reflect something of significance or describe the course of their lives. For example: Noah(Comfort), Solomon(peace), Manasseh("causing to forget").
1. Not to use in vain Ex 20:7
“Not utter idly, not misuse, not use carelessly”. To use God’s name in making a vow was to command the power and holiness of God himself into the relationship. We take God's name in vain.
1.By hypocrisy, making a profession of God's name, but not living up to that profession. “Having the form Godliness and denying the power of it” (II Tim 3:5). Worship is vain (Matthew 15:7-9), their oblations are vain (Isaiah 1:11,13-14), their religion is vain, (James 1:26).
2. By covenant-breaking if we make promises to God, and yet perform not to the Lord our vows, we take his name in vain (Matthew 5:33, Ecclesiastes 5:4, Galatians 6:7).
3. cursing and Blaspheming the name of the Lord: Lev 24:15-16. Blasphemy is against God.
4. By false swearing, Lev 19:12, Deuteronomy 10:20, Matthew 5:33-34, and James 5:12 . It was to show others that we could be trusted because God was trustworthy.
2. Do not profane the name of the Lord Lev. 18:21, 19:12, 22:32
Lev. 18:3 The important silver line in the ten commandments was shall not do like- Egypt (where you lived), Canaan (where you are going to live).
Profaning by Sexual relations and acts: Lev. 18:24 don’t defiles. Lev 18:26 abominations. Lev 18:22 not with male. Lev 18:23 not with animal. Lev 18:6-21 not with Near skin, father, mother, father’s wife, sister, brother’s daughter, daughter’s daughter, father’s wife daughter, father’s sister, mother’s sister, aunt, daughter-in-law, brother’s wife, woman and her daughter, wife’s sister.
Lev 19:12: Don’t steal, no false dealings, not lie. Lev 22:32 I am sanctifying you. Sanctify the name of God( Is 29:23), Ezek. 36:23, Hollowed be thy name (Mt 6:9)
3. Glorify the Name, Proclaim the name. I Chr. 16:2, 8,10,29.
Bless in the name of the Lord. David blessed the people in the name of the Lord (II Sam 6:18, I Chr. 16:2), Pastoral Blessing – II Cor. 13:14, Priestly Blessings – Nu 6:23-26
Heal in the name of the Lord (Ac 3:6),
Cast out in the name of Christ (Ac 16:18)
Proclaim the name of the Lord. 16:8, Proclaim the forgiveness of Sins, (Lk. 24:47), Eternal life (Jn.20:31)
Glory in his holy name. 16:10– glory not in horses, glory not in children, glory not in jobs, glory not in property (Ps 20:7-8, Dan 2:20).
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name. 16:29.
