Things Only God Can Do

I. Only God Can Save A Person

Only God can draw someone to Himself.

Illustration – J. Vernon McGee tells the story of a young man being questioned about his salvation experience.

“How did you get saved.” He was asked.

He replied, “God did his part and I did my part.”

The man asked, “What was God’s part and what was your part.”

The young man replied, “God’s part was saving and my part was sinning. I ran from Him as fast as I could, but He took after me till He ran me down.”

When you see people coming to Christ, then you know that God is at work for only God can save souls.

II. Only God Can Cause People To Seek After Him.

Rom 3:10-12

10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Ps 14:1-3

1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Whenever you find someone asking about becoming a Christian – God is working.

III. Only God Can Reveal Spiritual Truth

When you see people being opened to God’s truth, then you know God is at work.

IV. Only God Can Convict A Man Of Their Sin

Of What Sin? – Not Believing On Jesus Christ.

One reason that I don’t do a lot of shouting and pounding when I preach is that I cannot convict anyone of their sin. Only God can do that. There is nothing wrong with shouting when you preach but is it our flesh or is it God.

John 16:7-11

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

V. Only God Can Convict Someone Regarding Who Christ Is And What He Did On Calvary

We can argue with an atheist all day but will get nowhere unless God is working in their heart. This is why prayer and evangelism go hand in hand.

VI. Only God Can Convict The World Of Judgment.

Because Christ bore our sins on Calvary, He was judged for us.

When You See These Six Things Happening – God Is At Work.

What do you do if you want to know where God is at work – You start by praying.

There is one other thing that only God can do.

VII. Only God Can Bring Real Revival.

There never has been a great moving of God, except it was preceded by a time of earnest prayer. Before the day of Pentecost, they had prayed for 40 days.

Sometimes we hear of the great revivals of the last century and we think – God doesn’t work that way anymore. We have become fatalists.

‘Jesus is coming soon – the world is getting wickeder so let’s just give up and accept that God will never give revival again.”

Not True – We Have the same God.

Conclusion – What Are We To Pray For In A Revival?

1. For Ourselves – to get right with God.

2. For the Power of the Holy Spirit

Zech 4:6 “…Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”

3. We are to pray for lost souls.
