This sermon encourages believers to step into God's promises with strength and courage, guided by His Word, assured of His constant presence and faithfulness.
Good morning, beloved family in Christ, it is once again a joy and a privilege to gather together in the house of the Lord. Today, we find ourselves standing at the threshold of a new dawn, a new chapter, a new promise. With expectant hearts, we turn our gaze towards the book of Joshua, specifically the first chapter, verses one to nine.
The words penned in these verses are not just mere words, but they are a divine compass, guiding us towards the fulfillment of the promises of God. They are a beacon of hope, illuminating our path towards a future ordained by God Himself.
As we turn to these sacred scriptures, let us remember the profound words of the great preacher, Charles Spurgeon, who once declared, "A Bible that's falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't." How true these words ring to our hearts today! Our strength, our resilience, our hope, they all find their roots in the Word of God.
Let us now read the passage together: "After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 'Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.'” (Joshua 1:1-9)
As we stand on the threshold of a new dawn, we find ourselves gazing at the vast expanse of the future that God has promised us. This future is not just a mere figment of our imagination or a distant dream. It is a tangible reality, a divine inheritance that God has set aside for us. The scripture we read today from the book of Joshua is a testament to this truth.
In this passage, God speaks to Joshua, the newly appointed leader of the Israelites, and gives him a divine mandate to lead the people into the Promised Land. This land was not just any land. It was a land flowing with milk and honey, a land of abundance and prosperity.
The first thing we notice in this passage is that God gives Joshua a clear and specific command: "Get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them." This command is a direct and unequivocal instruction from God. It is a call to action, a call to step out in faith and claim the promise that God has given.
This brings us to the first aspect of possessing the promised future. It requires action on our part. We cannot just sit back and expect the promises of God to fall into our laps. We have to rise up, step out in faith, and claim what God has promised us. We have to be willing to take risks, to step out of our comfort zones, and to venture into the unknown.
Secondly is obedience. In the passage, God tells Joshua to be careful to obey all the laws that Moses had given them. This means that possessing the promised future is not just about claiming the promises of God. It is also about living in obedience to His commands. This is because obedience is the key that unlocks the door to the promises of God. When we obey God's commands, we align ourselves with His will, and this opens the way for His promises to be fulfilled in our lives.
The third aspect of possessing the promised future is courage. God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous. This is because stepping into the future that God has promised us often requires courage. It requires the courage to face the unknown, the courage to overcome obstacles, and the courage to persevere in the face of adversity. It is not always easy to step into the future that God has promised us. There will be challenges and difficulties along the way. But God assures us that He will be with us, and that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
Finally is faith. God tells Joshua that no one will be able to stand against him all the days of his life. This is a promise of victory, a promise of success. But this promise is not based on Joshua's strength or abilities. It is based on God's faithfulness. This means that possessing the promised future requires faith in God. It requires us to trust in His promises, to rely on His faithfulness, and to believe that He is able to do what He has promised.
As we stand on the precipice of promise, we are reminded of the divine assurance given to Joshua ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
