Message Point: Sin separates us from God; Jesus is the answer.
Focus Passage: 2 Samuel 12:1-13
Supplemental Passage: Psalm 51:1-4, 7-12, 14
Introduction:
Why are you a Christian? Is it to receive blessings and comfort and answered prayer and to have a social gathering to which you can belong? Is it to make your husband/wife/mother/father/son/daughter/best friend/pastor happy? It is to have peace/joy/patience/goodness/kindness/other spiritual fruit? Is it so that you hope you might be able to go to Heaven? OR IS IT BECAUSE YOU ARE SO MISERABLY DEAD IN YOUR SIN THAT YOU REALIZE THAT JESUS IS THE ONLY ANSWER? Parachute illustration:
I. The Wretchedness of Sin
a. (1 John 1:8 NASB) If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
b. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. (James 1:13-15 NASB)
II. The Wages of Sin
a. Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is death”
b. Living in sin? No blessings for you.
c. Refuse to repent/confess? No way EVER to please God.
III. The response
a. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. (Romans 7:24-25 NASB)
b. "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. "BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT." (Rom. 4:7-8 )
c. Our sin can not be covered up; hidden. It can only be cleansed by the Blood of Jesus.
