Message Point: The world constantly tries to pull your attention away from God.

Focus Passage: I John 2:15-17

Supplemental Passage: Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" Then the devil *took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and *said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me." Then Jesus *said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'" (Matthew 4:1-10 NASB)

Introduction: One time when Elvis was coming out of a hotel in Los Angeles, thousands were screaming “Elvis”, but he paid no attention to them. Pastor Thom Wolf called out “Mr. Presley” and Elvis stopped, came over to them, and they had their picture taken with him. The world knows how to get our attention, too, but it is not for good intentions.

I. Do Not Love the Things of this World

a. Lust of the flesh

i. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. (James 1:14 NASB)

ii. Desires of the flesh or pampering the senses – in essence, all that an animal would crave

iii. Satan tempted Jesus with this, “Turn these stones into bread” (Matt 4:3)

b. Lust of the eyes

i. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 NASB)

ii. "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. (Matthew 6:24 NASB)

c. Boastful pride of life

i. The demonstration of success in money, promotion, status, or possessions

ii. Pride takes glory away from God.

iii. For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends. (2 Corinthians 10:18 NASB)

II. The World Does Not Have Your Best Interest in Mind

a. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8 NASB)

b. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (James 4:4 NASB)

c. "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26 NASB)

III. Devote Yourself to God and Doing His Will

a. "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33 NASB)

b. Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. (Matthew 16:24 NASB)
