1. Introduction – The Most Painful Meeting
The Fourth Station of the Way of the Cross presents one of the most moving and heart-breaking moments in the Passion of Christ.
Jesus is carrying the heavy Cross through the streets of Jerusalem.
His body is wounded.
His strength is fading.
Blood flows from the crown of thorns.
The crowd is shouting and mocking Him.
And suddenly, in the midst of this suffering road, His eyes meet the eyes of His Mother.
No words are recorded.
But this silent meeting speaks louder than any speech.
A Son suffering.
A Mother watching.
Two hearts united in pain.
Two hearts united in obedience to the will of God.
This moment reveals something very important:
Redemption is not only the suffering of Jesus — it is also the suffering of a Mother who shares the mission of her Son.
This station invites us to meditate on:
• The suffering love of a mother
• The faith of Mary in the midst of darkness
• The mystery of sharing in Christ's suffering
• The presence of Mary in our own crosses

2. Biblical Foundation
The meeting of Jesus and His Mother during the Way of the Cross is not directly described in the Gospels, but it is deeply rooted in biblical revelation.
Luke 2:34-35
When Jesus was presented in the temple, Simeon spoke to Mary:
“This child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel… and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
From the beginning of Jesus' life, Mary knew that her Son's mission would involve suffering.
The prophecy of Simeon now becomes reality.
The sword that pierces Mary's soul is the suffering she experiences as she watches Jesus carry the Cross.

John 19:25
“Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother…”
Mary does not run away.
She does not hide.
She remains near Jesus even in the darkest moment.
Her presence on the Way of the Cross begins here in the Fourth Station.

3. The Silent Language of Love
This meeting between Jesus and His Mother is silent.
But silence sometimes speaks more deeply than words.
Imagine the moment.
Jesus lifts His tired eyes.
He sees His Mother.
Mary sees her wounded Son.
In that one look there is:
• love
• sorrow
• courage
• acceptance of God's will
Mary cannot remove the Cross.
She cannot stop the suffering.
But she can remain present.
And sometimes presence is the greatest love.

4. The Heart of a Mother
A mother's love is unique.
A mother carries her child for nine months.
She nourishes him, protects him, and raises him.
And now Mary must watch her Son suffer.
Imagine what Mary remembers as she sees Jesus.
She remembers:
• the angel's announcement
• the birth in Bethlehem
• the flight into Egypt
• the childhood of Jesus
• the hidden years in Nazareth
Now all those memories meet the painful reality of the Cross.
Her heart is breaking.
But she remains faithful.

5. Spiritual Diagnosis
This station reveals a deep truth about human life.
No one escapes suffering.
Every person will carry a cross.
Every family will experience pain.
Every heart will face moments of sorrow.
But the question is not:
“Will we suffer?”
The real question is:
“How will we suffer?”
Will we suffer with despair?
Or will we suffer with faith?
Mary teaches us how to suffer with faith.

6. Illustration
A priest once visited a hospital where a young man was dying of cancer.
The mother sat beside the bed day and night.
She could not heal him.
She could not remove his pain.
But she remained beside him.
The priest asked her,
“Why do you stay here every moment?”
She answered,
“My presence cannot remove his suffering, but it reminds him that he is not suffering alone.”
That is exactly what Mary does for Jesus.
She cannot remove the Cross.
But she reminds Him that He is not alone.

7. The Message for the Church
This station speaks powerfully to the Church today.
The Church is like Mary.
The world is full of suffering people:
• the poor
• the sick
• the lonely
• the rejected
• the wounded
Sometimes we cannot solve their problems.
Sometimes we cannot remove their suffering.
But we can offer something very powerful:
our presence.
To stand beside the suffering.
To walk with the wounded.
To accompany those who carry crosses.
This is the mission of the Church.
