The Unstoppable Power Of Faith Series
Contributed by Paul Dayao on Mar 28, 2026 (message contributor)
Summary: This sermon celebrates the triumphant power of faith, demonstrating through the historical miracles of Daniel, the Hebrew children, and the prophets that God can conquer kingdoms, shut the mouths of lions, and transform our deepest weaknesses into supernatural strength.
Introduction: When Faith Goes to War
After listing the flawed but faithful heroes in verse 32, the writer of Hebrews shifts gears. He moves from who they were to what their faith accomplished. He unleashes a rapid-fire catalog of some of the most spectacular, jaw-dropping miracles in human history.
Often, we think of faith as a quiet, internal comfort—a peaceful feeling we hold onto during hard times. And while faith certainly brings peace, these verses remind us that faith is also a weapon. It is an active, aggressive, unstoppable force. When human impossibility collides with living faith, the laws of nature are suspended, armies are scattered, and the kingdom of God advances. Let's look at what the active power of faith can accomplish.
1. Faith Conquers and Constructs
The passage begins by describing faith on the offensive: "Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises..."
This describes leaders like Joshua, David, and the Judges. They didn't just sit around hoping things would get better; they went to war against the darkness. David, for example, subdued the surrounding pagan kingdoms and established justice.
2 Samuel 8:15 (KJV)
"And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people."
Notice the balance here. They didn't just tear down evil ("subdued kingdoms"); they also built up the good ("wrought righteousness"). True faith is never just about fighting what is wrong in the world; it is about actively doing what is right. Furthermore, they "obtained promises." God had made promises to them, but they still had to step out in faith to claim them.
The Lesson: What "kingdom" of darkness is God calling you to subdue today? Is it a generational curse in your family? A culture of corruption in your workplace? Faith gives you the power to stand up, do what is righteous, and lay hold of the promises of God.
2. Faith Overrides the Laws of Nature
Next, the writer points to faith's power over deadly, physical realities: "...stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword..."
Every Jewish reader immediately knew who these phrases were talking about.
When Daniel was thrown into the den of starving predators because he refused to stop praying, he didn't fight the lions; he trusted God. And God suspended the hunger of the beasts.
Daniel 6:22-23 (KJV)
"My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt... Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God."
Similarly, when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into a furnace heated seven times hotter than normal, their faith "quenched the violence of fire." They didn't put the fire out; the fire simply lost its power to burn them because the Son of God was walking in the flames with them.
Daniel 3:25, 27 (KJV)
"He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God... And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them."
The Lesson: You may feel like you have been thrown into a lion's den of false accusations or a fiery furnace of intense affliction. But faith reminds us that God has absolute authority over the very elements of nature and the wrath of man. If He does not deliver you from the fire, He will preserve you in the fire.
3. Faith Transforms Weakness into Miracles
Perhaps the most encouraging phrase in the entire chapter is this: "...out of weakness were made strong... Women received their dead raised to life again."
How did Gideon defeat a massive army with 300 men? How did Samson bring down a temple as a blind, broken prisoner? They were made strong out of weakness. God specializes in taking our absolute inadequacy and turning it into the platform for His greatest miracles.
The Apostle Paul learned this exact same lesson centuries later:
2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)
"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
