Summary: The Unity Psalm
Psalm 133:1-3 The Unity Psalm
penned by David, when all the tribes of Israel had anointed him king.
I. The Delight In Unity -
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
It's Beauty - 1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
It is the Desire of the Saviour,
The Delight of the Saints
The Dread of Satan - Matt 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there am I in the midst of them.
It's Basis - for brethren to dwell together
A Common Birth - for brethren
A Common Bond - to dwell together
A Common Body - in unity
It's Blessing - Behold, how good and how pleasant (delightful, sweet.)
1. Unity Is Pleasant Like The Sweet Honey (Taste)
2. Unity Is Pleasant Like The Sweet Harvest (Sight)
3. Unity Is Pleasant Like The Sweet Harmony (Sound)
It is as if David is saying, “How sweet it is!”
It's Bounty -
A Common Blessing - 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
2. The Desire For Unity -
2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard,
even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
The Divine Anointing - It is like the precious ointment upon the head
The Distinct Anointing - that ran down upon the beard, (Aroma)
The Direct Anointing - even Aaron’s beard:
The Decisive Anointing - that went down to the skirts of his garments (Total Consecration)
3. The Design Of Unity - 3 As the dew of Hermon,
The Dispersion of the dew - 3 As the dew of Hermon (Feeding Jordan)
The Direction of the dew - as the dew that descended (From Above)
It flows from the head, which is Christ - Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
The Distinction of the dew - upon the mountains of Zion:
Coming Down in a Particular Place, at a Particular Period, For a Particular Purpose.
The Discretion of the dew. Falling - Swiftly, Silently, Surely, Sufficiently.
4. The Dynamic Through Unity -
for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
It's Significance - for there (Only there and there alone)
It's Sovereignty - the LORD
It's Sufficiency - commanded the blessing
It's Salvation - even life
It's Satisfaction - for evermore.
In 1765 Dr. John Fawcett was called to pastor a very small church at Wainsgate, England. He laboured there for 7 years and then received a call from a much larger church in London, and decided to accept. Finally Mrs. Fawcett exclaimed, “O John, I just can’t bear this. They need us so badly here.” “God has spoken to my heart, too!” he said. “Tell them to unload the wagon! We cannot break these wonderful ties of fellowship.”
This experience inspired Fawcett to write a hymn.
“Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love!
The fellowship of kindred mind is like to that above.”
Before our Father's throne we pour our ardent prayers;
our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares.
We share each other's woes, our mutual burdens bear;
and often for each other flows, the sympathizing tear.
When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain;
but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again.
