A sermon on Good Friday focusing on the Crucifixion
A Sermon for Good Friday
Scripture: Matthew 27:33-50, Luke 23:34-48
Today, we reflect on the events of Good Friday, specifically the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In Matthew 27:33-50, we read about how Jesus was taken to a place called Golgotha, where he was crucified between two robbers. People passing by mocked him, and even the chief priests and elders joined in, taunting him and challenging him to save himself if he truly was the Son of God. Darkness covered the land from the sixth hour until the ninth hour, and at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" He then breathed his last.
In Luke 23:34-48, we see a similar account of the crucifixion. Jesus prays for forgiveness for those who crucified him, saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." The soldiers mock him, offering him vinegar and challenging him to save himself if he is the King of the Jews. One of the criminals crucified with Jesus also mocks him, but the other rebukes him and asks Jesus to remember him when he enters his kingdom. Jesus assures him that he will be with him in paradise. Darkness covers the land, and Jesus cries out again before breathing his last.
From these passages, we can draw several important lessons. First, we see Jesus' incredible capacity for forgiveness. Despite the pain and humiliation he endured, he still prayed for forgiveness for those who crucified him. This challenges us to examine our own hearts and consider whether we are willing to forgive those who have wronged us.
Secondly, we witness the depth of Jesus' love for us. He willingly took our place on the cross, bearing the weight of our sins and offering us the opportunity for salvation. This should fill us with gratitude and inspire us to live lives that honor and reflect his love.
Lastly, we are reminded of the power of God's plan of salvation. Jesus' cry of abandonment on the cross reveals the immense sacrifice he made for us. He experienced separation from the Father so that we could be reconciled to God. This demonstrates the depth of God's love for us and the lengths he was willing to go to save us.
As we reflect on the events of Good Friday, let us remember the forgiveness, love, and sacrifice demonstrated by Jesus on the cross. May we strive to forgive others as he forgave, and may we live in gratitude for the salvation he offers us.
