1. Introduction – A Cry from the Cross

My dear brothers and sisters,

Today, during this holy Lenten season, we stand at the foot of the Cross.

We listen carefully to the words that Jesus spoke while hanging on Calvary.

The Cross is not only a place of suffering.

It is a place of revelation.

From the Cross, Jesus reveals the deepest truths about God, about humanity, and about salvation.

Among the seven last words of Jesus, the fifth word is very short:

“I thirst.” (John 19:28)

Two simple words.

But these two words open a deep spiritual mystery.

At first glance, it seems like a simple human request for water.

But when we listen carefully, we discover that this word reveals:

• the human suffering of Jesus

• the fulfilment of Scripture

• the love of Christ for souls

• and the spiritual thirst of God for humanity

Today, let us stand before the Cross and listen to the voice of Jesus who says:

“I thirst.”

2. The Physical Thirst of Jesus

First, we must understand the physical suffering of Jesus.

Crucifixion was one of the most painful forms of execution ever invented.

The body of Jesus was already exhausted even before He was nailed to the Cross.

Think about what He endured.

Loss of Blood

Jesus had already lost a large amount of blood.

• during the scourging

• during the crowning with thorns

• during the carrying of the Cross

• during the nails driven into His hands and feet

The loss of blood causes extreme dehydration.

The Position of the Crucified Body

The position of the body on the Cross was unnatural.

The arms were stretched.

The body weight hung from the nails.

The muscles were pulled beyond their natural limits.

Every breath required immense effort.

The Overstretched Muscles

The muscles of the body were stretched painfully.

Every movement caused intense pain.

Wounds Exposed to Air

The wounds were open.

Dust and air touched the wounds.

The burning pain increased the suffering.

The Crown of Thorns

The thorns pierced the head of Jesus.

This caused terrible headaches and intense pain.

Swelling and Inflammation

The blood vessels swelled.

The entire body became inflamed.

All these sufferings would naturally produce extreme physical thirst.

So when Jesus said “I thirst,”

He was expressing the real human suffering of His body.

3. Jesus Truly Became Human

This moment reminds us of an important truth:

Jesus is fully God and fully human.

He experienced hunger.

He experienced fatigue.

He experienced pain.

And here on the Cross, He experienced thirst.

The Son of God who created water

now asks for water.

The One who said,

“Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink” (John 7:37)

is now the one who thirsts.

This reveals the depth of the Incarnation.

God truly entered human suffering.

He did not remain distant.

He suffered with us.

4. Jesus Refused to Use His Power for Himself

Here we discover another profound truth.

Jesus had the power to satisfy His thirst instantly.

Remember the miracle at Cana.

He turned water into wine.

If He wished, He could have created water immediately.

But He did not.

Why?

Because Jesus never used His divine power for His own comfort.

He used miracles:

• to heal the sick

• to feed the hungry

• to raise the dead

• to help others

But never for Himself.

Even in the desert temptation, Satan said:

“Turn these stones into bread.”

Jesus refused.

Now on the Cross He again refuses.

The One who can give living water

chooses to experience thirst.

Why?

Because He wanted to fully accept the suffering of the Cross.

5. Fulfilment of Scripture

The Gospel of John says something important.

“Jesus knew that everything was now finished, and to fulfil the Scripture he said: ‘I thirst.’”

This refers to Psalm 69:21

“They gave me poison for food,

and for my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.”

Jesus was fulfilling the Scriptures.

Even in His final moments, Jesus was conscious of the plan of salvation.

Nothing happened by accident.

Everything was part of God’s plan for redemption.

6. The Spiritual Meaning of “I Thirst”

Now we must go deeper.

Jesus' thirst is not only physical.

It is also spiritual.

Jesus thirsts for something greater than water.

Jesus thirsts for souls.

This thirst is the thirst of divine love.

Jesus thirsts for humanity.

He thirsts for:

• sinners

• the lost

• the broken

• those far from God

From the Cross Jesus is saying:

“I thirst for you.”
