THE SUPREME DEMONSTRATION OF GOD’S LOVE

Romans 5:6-8

R.C Sproul said “The glory of Gospel is that God pronounces people “just” while they are still sinners.

1 John 4:8 says "God is love." God personifies love; in fact, if it has to do with God, it has to do with love. Someone has said that:

Mercy is God's forgiving love.

Grace is God's undeserved love.

Peace is God's comforting love.

The will of God is God's unerring love.

Providence is God's caring love.

The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ is God's proven love.

Sanctification is God's nurturing love.

Heaven is God's rewarding love.

Eternity is God's unending love.

One of the greatest descriptions of God's love is found in Romans 5:8; there Paul says that “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” I would like to look at this verse and examine "The Supreme Demonstration Of God's Love"

- There are 5 truths I would like to consider about God's love. The first is the fact that:

I. GOD’S LOVE IS INTENTIONAL - "But God demonstrates His own love"

The idea here is that God demonstrated His amazing love by sending His Son to die for us. This shows us just how marvelous the love of God really is. In verse 6 we are told that "we were without strength". This means that we had no hope of redemption apart from Christ. Because of our sins we were separated from God. However, God Almighty, the very Creator of the Universe so desired to have a personal relationship with us that He purposely provided us with a great plan of salvation.

God's love was, and still is "intentional" love. There are certain verses that prove this fact. (John 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.) God sent Jesus to this world to save lost souls. Jesus willingly left the glories of Heaven to come and "seek and save that which was lost". We are those that were lost! Because of the fall of Man in the Garden of Eden we were born into this world as lost sinners. Romans 6:23 tells us that the result of our sin or the "wages of our sin is death"! But through God's intentional love He has offered us a great gift. That gift is "eternal life though Jesus Christ".

God knew we needed salvation, and He made a way for us to receive salvation. We must never forget the price that was paid for our salvation. This leads us to the fact that:

GOD'S LOVE IS SACRIFICIAL - "But God demonstrates His own love"

The Heavenly Father willingly gave His only begotten Son to redeem lost man. Though salvation is a free gift to us, it cost a great price. Hebrews 9:22 says that ...without shedding of blood (there) is no remission.

In order for us to receive eternal life, there had to be a pure spotless sacrifice for our sins. Our works and morality would never be good enough to attain salvation. But because of God's sacrificial love we have the opportunity to be saved. Listen to what Paul said in: Titus 3:4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Likewise Ephesians 2:8-9 says “For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

No rituals, ceremonies, ordinances or observances would suffice. Our only hope of salvation is found in the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:7 (says that) "we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace" In order for salvation to be available, God had to provide a sacrifice. In the Person of Jesus Christ, God provided the Lamb that would take away the sins of the world. This leads us to another amazing fact about the love of God. We see that:

GOD’S LOVE IS PERSONAL - "God demonstrates His own love toward us"

God willingly gave His Son to be the sacrifice for sins. But this is not merely a general action; it is a personal, intimate action. God commended His love “toward us”. This shows how special we are to God.

It has often been said that if you were the only one who needed to be redeemed, Jesus would have came and died just for you. This is seen in John 3:16, there Jesus says "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" This is a universal verse but it is also very personal. Let me illustrate. This verse could very well say: “For God so loved you, that he gave his one and only Son, that if you believes in him, you shall not perish but have eternal life.” Each of us could place our names there and it would apply. God sent His Son so that you could have eternal life!
