Isaiah 53

1. THE SLIGHTED ONE v. 1 – 3 “Who hath believed our report?” Rejected by:-

(a) The Jews – John 1 v. 11 “He came unto his own, and his own received him not”

(b) The Greeks – 1 Corinthians 1 v. 23 “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness.

(c) The World - John 1 v. 10 “He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not”

1. THE COLDNESS OF THEIR REJECTION

A) He Was Contemptibly Rejected 3 He is despised

B) He Was Casually Rejected 3 and rejected of men; and we hid as it were our faces from him;

C) He Was Continually Rejected 3 He is despised and rejected of men; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. "Why are fire trucks red? Well, fire trucks have four wheels and eight men; everybody knows that four plus eight is twelve. There are 12 inches in a ruler. Queen Elizabeth is a ruler and also the name of one of the largest ships on the seven seas. Seas have fish and fish have fins. Fins fought the Russians. Russians are always rushin'. Therefore, fire trucks are red." "If you think this is wild, you ought to hear some people try to explain why they don't come to church."

2. THE BLINDNESS OF THEIR REJECTION 2 Corinthians 4:4, "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

A) The Work of Christ v. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

B) The Worth of Christ v.3 and we esteemed him not Those who know Him say with Peter, "Unto you therefore which believe He is precious" (2 Peter 2:7).

The artist has found Him to be the One altogether lovely.

The architect has found Him to be the Chief Cornerstone.

The astronomer has found Him to be the Sun of Righteousness.

The baker has found Him to be the Bread of Life.

The banker has found Him to be the Hidden Treasure.

The biologist has found Him to be the Life.

The carpenter has found Him to be the Sure Foundation.

The builder has found Him to be the True Cornerstone.

The doctor has found Him to be the Great Physician.

The educator has found Him to be the Great Teacher.

The farmer has found Him to be the Lord of the Harvest.

The florist has found Him to be the Rose of Sharon

The geologist has found Him to be the Rock of Ages.

The horticulturist had found Him to be the True Vine.

The judge has found Him to be the Righteous Judge.

The juror has found Him to be the True Witness.

The jeweler has found Him to be the Pearl of Great Price.

The editor has found Him to be Good Tidings of Great Joy.

The philosopher has found Him to be the Wisdom of God.

The printer has found Him to be the True Type.

The servant has found Him to be the Good Master.

The student has found Him to be the Incarnate Truth.

The toiler has found Him to be the Giver of Rest.

The sinner has found Him to be the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.

The Christian has found Him to be the Son of the Living God, the Saviour, the Redeemer and Lord.

3. THE SADNESS OF THEIR REJECTION

A) The Folly of Their Rejection v. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

B) The Fatality of Their Rejection v. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. The Only Saviour for Sin

2.THE SUFFERING ONE – v. 4 “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows” (a) The Reality of His Sufferings v.4 “He bore our sorrows,

v. 4 our sufferings – “afflicted” v. 5 our sins “he was wounded for our transgressions”

A. He Suffered Pain At The Hands Of The Soldiers - 1. Beating - Luke 22:63-64; And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. 64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? Psa. 129:3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows. 2. Scourging - Matt. 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. 3. Spitting - Matt. 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 4. Mockery - Matt. 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 5. Beard Plucked From Face - Isa. 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. 6. Stripped - Matt. 27:35 - And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 7. Nailed To The Cross - Matt. 27:38; Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. John 20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 8. Crucifixion Itself - A death on the cross is the most horrible form of execution known to mankind! "excruciating" B. He Suffered Parting From The Sovereign God - Matt. 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? C. He Suffered The Penalty Of Sin For Sinners - In Isa. 53:6,
