Summary: There is great joy in heaven, whenever a sinner genuinely repented and turned to the Saviour, either for the first time or after a fallen away from Him.
The Sinner's Repentance and the Saviour's Rejoicing
Study Text: Luke 15: 3 - 10
Introduction:
This passage, highlights God's boundless joy and relentless pursuit of the lost, using the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin.
Jesus emphasizes that a sinner's repentance brings more joy in heaven than the righteousness of 99 others.
We will be doing a systemic and expository study of these two parables, and then consider the lessons that will be of great blessings to us. Thus, we shall be discussing under three subheadings:
A. The Parable of the Lost Sheep
B. The Parable of the Lost Coin
C. The Profitable Lessons from the Parables
A. The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3-7):
There are two things to consider in this parable.
1. The Love and Passion of the Shepherd
A shepherd with 100 sheep loses one, but rather than staying with the remaining 99, he goes after the one lost sheep until he finds it.
The shepherd's actions demonstrate God's passion and unwavering commitment to seek and save the lost.
2. The Joy and Satisfaction of the Shepherd
When the sheep is found, the shepherd joyfully carries it back home, rejoicing with his friends and neighbours.
This parable illustrates that God experiences immense joy over one repentant sinner, surpassing the satisfaction of a hundred righteous individuals.
B. The Parable of the Lost Coin (Luke 15:8-10):
Also, in this parable, we can consider two things:
1. A Great Determination:
A woman loses one of her ten precious coins and diligently searches for it, sweeping her house until she finds it.
The woman's meticulous search emphasizes the value and importance of each individual in the sight of God, even the seemingly insignificant ones.
God does not want anyone to perish, but desires that all will come into repentance and be saved.
2. A Great Celebration:
The woman calls together her friends and neighbours to celebrate her joy in finding the lost coin.
Just as the woman celebrates the found coin, there is a celebration in heaven over one sinner who repents.
C. The Profitable Lessons from the Parables:
There are several important truths to learn from the parable s.
1. The Great Love for the Lost:
These parables demonstrate God's unconditional love and persistent search for those who are lost or straying from His path.
2. The Great Value of Repentance:
Repentance is not merely a requirement, but a response to God's grace and a source of great joy in heaven.
3. The Great Joy in Heaven:
We are called to rejoice with God over the lost who are found, welcoming them into the community of faith and celebrating their return.
4. The Great Pattern to Embrace:
As followers of Christ, we are called to be like the shepherd and the woman, actively seeking the lost and rejoicing in their recovery.
5. The Great Discouragement to Overcome:
Even when facing challenges and setbacks, we must persevere in our efforts to reach the lost, remembering that God's joy in their repentance is unparalleled.
6. The Great Prayer to Perform:
There are several important prayer points that will be of great help:
1. Seek God's Guidance:
Ask God to reveal those who are lost and in need of His grace.
2. Offer Prayers of Thanksgiving:
Give thanks for the joy of finding the lost and the power of repentance.
3. Ask for Wisdom:
Pray for wisdom to be effective in sharing the gospel and welcoming those who are drawn to Christ.
