The Significance Of The Purpose Of Jesus’ Birth Series

INTRODUCTION

Today is the last sermon that I will be giving for the year.

We have had a great year and we can only thank God for this.

We have seen how He had His hand in every aspect of this church and how he made changes in people’s lives and relationships and their finances.

We have seen miracles and how He aided those in hospitals.

We have seen the working of the Holy Spirit in this Church.

And for that I would like to thank Him.

This morning I am ending the series on THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JESUS’ BIRTH, with the third instalment entitled THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PURPOSE OF JESUS’ BIRTH.

Last week we discussed the significance of the Place of Jesus’s birth and the week prior to that the significance of the Timing of Jesus’ Birth.

So let’s start with our series scripture:

Luke 2:1-7 KJV

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And now the sermon scripture.

And this is probably the best know scripture in the Bible:

John 3:16-18 KJV

(16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

(17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

(18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

SERMON INTRODUCTION

Today we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ.

Now some people do not think that the birth of Jesus has any great significance and would argue that it is His death on the cross and His resurrection that is of importance.

Yes, Jesus’ death on the cross is of great significance for all mankind as is His resurrection.

However, it is illogical to debate that the birth of Jesus is of no or little concern because, if Jesus was never born He could not have died on the cross.

The birth of Jesus is where everything started.

It is where His death on the cross and His resurrection started from.

Therefore, for me personally, Jesus’ Birth is of the utmost importance.

It is, however, sad to observe how people usually celebrate Christmas.

They forget the true reason why we celebrate Christmas.

All they see is presents and eating and drinking and father Christmas.

So our first question should be:

“Why are we celebrating Christmas?”

And the answer is easy…

We celebrate Christmas because we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

We are celebrating His Birthday.

And the giving of gifts and the eating and the celebrations are just by-products of the celebration of His birthday.

The second thing that we need to understand when it comes to the birth of Jesus, is this:

Why was Jesus Born in the first place?

What is the significance of the purpose of Jesus’ Birth?

Well this morning I will discuss 4 Primary reason for the Birth of Jesus

Why was Jesus born?

JESUS WAS BORN…

TO REDEEM MANKIND

Adam and Eve found themselves in the Garden of Eden.

They had everything they need.

Enough food, no dangers, everlasting life, communion with God…

Everything was perfect.

But God had one restriction.

They were not allowed to eat from the tree in the middle of the garden.

And you all know the story.

They did eat from the tree and this meant that they sinned.

They disobeyed God.

When they ate from the fruit they were detached from God, lost for eternity.

And, as we read in Romans 6:23, the payment for sin is death.

Therefore someone needed to pay it.

But no one on earth was able pay the debt because no one is perfect, no one was without sin

Therefore, a perfect sacrifice was needed and there was only one person who could fulfil that requirements and that was Jesus Christ.
