Summary: The who, how and what of spiritual refreshment.
… he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake (Psalm 23:3).
1. I CAN’T RESTORE MY SOUL – BUT GOD CAN
He doesn’t reform it; he doesn’t patch it up; He restores my soul to its original intended state, a state that I have never experienced before.
He resorts my vigour; he restores my energy, he restores my passion and focus; he restores my hope; he restores my soul.
2. THE WORD OF GOD PROVIDES THE IMPETUS FOR RESTORATION
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul (Psalm 19:7)
Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16)
Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles (Psalm 103:5)
But those who hope in the Lord shall renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:31)
3. CHANGED BEHAVIOUR IS EVIDENCE OF A RESTORED SOUL
… you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge, in the image of its Creator (Colossians 3:9-10)
