Summary: The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings that illustrate the importance of these qualities, which are essential for a life of obedience and service to God.
In the pursuit of spiritual growth and maturity, Christians are called to cultivate a renewed mind, one that is transformed by the power of God's Word and guided by the principles of humility and lowliness. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings that illustrate the importance of these qualities, which are essential for a life of obedience and service to God.
Lowliness of Mind
Lowliness of mind is a key characteristic of a renewed mind. It involves a willingness to associate with humble tasks and lowly people, rather than seeking eminence or prestige. In Romans 12:16, the apostle Paul exhorts believers to "do not set your mind on high things but associate with the humble”. This attitude is exemplified in the life of David, who wrote in Psalm 131:1-2 "Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me"
The warning to Jeremiah in Jeremiah 45:5 also highlights the importance of humility. God says, "Behold, what I have built I will break down, and what I have planted I will pluck up... Seek the great things for yourself? Do not seek them" . This caution against ambition and pride is echoed in the teachings of Jesus, who instructed his disciples to avoid seeking greatness and instead to focus on serving others (Luke 22:24-27).
The ultimate example of lowliness of mind is Jesus himself, who "made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7 ). By embracing humility and servanthood, Jesus demonstrated the true nature of a renewed mind.
Humbleness of Mind
Humbleness of mind is another essential quality of a renewed mind. It involves a recognition of one's limitations and a willingness to learn from God and others. In Romans 12:16, the apostle Paul warns against being "wise in your own opinion" , a caution that is echoed in Proverbs 3:7, "Do not be wise in your own eyes" .
The Bible provides numerous examples of the dangers of pride and arrogance. Isaiah laments the fact that "Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!" (Isaiah 5:21). Paul also cautions against self-conceit, writing, "If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise" (1 Corinthians 3:18 ).
In contrast, humility is a hallmark of a renewed mind. Jesus himself demonstrated this quality, submitting to the will of his Father and refusing to exploit his equality with God (John 6:38; Philippians 2:6). By embracing humility, believers can cultivate a strong sense of dependence on God and a willingness to learn from others.
The Importance of Scripture and Experience
So how can believers cultivate lowliness and humbleness of mind? One key way is by listening to Scripture, which provides numerous warnings against pride and ambition. The Bible teaches that "knowledge puffs up, but love edifies" (1 Corinthians 8:1), and that "the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God" (1 Corinthians 1:20 ).
Experience also plays a role in cultivating humility. As believers learn and grow, they often come to realize how little they know and how much they depend on God. This realization can foster a sense of humility and dependence on God.
Biblical Examples
• David's humility in Psalm 131:1-2
• Jesus' teaching on servanthood in Luke 22:24-27
• Jesus' example of humility in Philippians 2:5-8
• Paul's warning against pride in 1 Corinthians 3:18
• The importance of Scripture in cultivating humility in 1 Corinthians 8:1-3
Conclusion
In conclusion, a renewed mind is characterized by lowliness and humbleness. These qualities are essential for a life of obedience and service to God. By embracing humility and servanthood, believers can cultivate a strong sense of dependence on God and a willingness to learn from others. As we seek to adopt the mind of Christ, we must prioritize these qualities and strive to think the same thoughts as Christ. By doing so, we will be transformed by the renewing of our minds and will live lives that reflect the character of Jesus.
