“THE REASON FOR THE SEASON”

TEXT: Matthew 1:18-21 Isaiah 9:6

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privately. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

INTRODUCTION:

OUR GREATEST NEED!

If our greatest need had been information – God would have sent us an EDUCATOR…

If our greatest need had been technology – God would have sent us a SCIENTIST…

If our greatest need had been money – God would have sent us an ECONOMIST…

If our greatest need had been pleasure – God would have sent us an ENTERTAINER…

BUT, our greatest need was forgiveness – So God sent us a SAVIOR!

Isaiah 9:6

“…and His Name shall be called WONDERFUL, COUNSELOR, THE MIGHTY GOD, THE EVERLASTING FATHER, THE PRINCE OF PEACE.”

Names are important to God: (in the book of Genesis…)

“God called the light DAY, and the darkness He called NIGHT. And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day…God called the expanse SKY. And there was evening, and there was morning – the second day…God called the dry ground LAND, and the gathered waters He called SEAS. And God saw that it was good.”
