Summary: Psalm 147 celebrates the return of the Jews to Jerusalem from exile. The psalmist recognises God's power and strength in arranging their return, in the safety and security of the capital, in his provision for them.
I. WHAT People Should Do
1. Praise God MUSICALLY
*verse 7, (use MUSICAL instruments to MAGNIFY God)
"Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
Sing praises on the harp to our God."
2. Praise God MOTIVATIONALLY
*verses 8-9, (praises is for the CONTINUES renewal of God's CREATION)
"Who covers the heavens with clouds,
Who prepares rain for the earth,
Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.
He gives to the beast its food,
And to the young ravens that cry."
3. Praise God MINDFULLY
*verses 10-11, (PRAISES is for giving PLEASURE to God)
"He does not delight in the strength of the horse;
He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.
The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him,
In those who hope in His mercy."
II. WHY People Should Do It
1. For God's PROTECTION to the family
*verses 12-13, (praises is for SAFETY and STRENGTH)
"Extol the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion,
For He has strengthened the bars of your gates;
He has blessed your children within you."
2. For God's PROVISION to the nation
*verse 14, (PEACE is necessary for food PRODUCTION)
"He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat."
3. For God's PURPOSE on earth
*verses 15-17, (His POWER makes all things POSSIBLE)
"He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?"
Conclusion: The Lord did all of these things to give His people salvation and satisfaction. We should always express our trust and hope to God in praises. Because giving glory to God in praises is His only satisfaction He can get from us.
