The Promise of Inheritance

March 2, 2025 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: The promise of inheritance is by faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

Focus Passage: Galatians 3:15-29

Supplemental Passage: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB)

Introduction: An inheritance is receiving that for which someone else worked, but designated you to own it. It is a gift. Disinheritance can happen among people due to a variety of circumstances. But the promise of inheritance from God is a sure thing to His children.

I. The Promise (Vs 15-18)

a. God's promises to Abraham were made unchangeable

b. The promise points directly to Christ as the fulfillment

c. The law, given 430 years later, does not annul the covenant previously ratified by God

II. The Law (Vs 19-24)

a. The law was given because of transgressions, acting as a guardian (schoolmaster) to lead people to Christ

b. The law reveals sin but cannot save; it points us to our need for faith in Jesus

c. Once Christ came, the law’s role as a tutor was fulfilled

III. The Inheritance (Vs 25-29)

a. Faith in Christ unites all believers—no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female

b. With faith in Christ, we are no longer under the law's guardianship

c. Baptized into Christ, we become heirs according to the promise

Application/Call to Obedience: The Bible says “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10 NASB)
