As believers, we often underestimate the power of our words. Yet, the Bible teaches us that our words have the ability to shape our destiny, bring life or death, and even create reality. In this sermon we'll explore the biblical significance of our words and how we can harness their power to speak life and fulfill our divine purpose.

Words Determine Destiny

In Numbers 13:26-31, we read the story of Caleb and Joshua, who, unlike the other ten scouts, reported that they could possess the Promised Land because they were "well able to overcome it." God responded by saying, "as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you" (Numbers 14:28). This passage illustrates the principle that our words have the power to determine our destiny.

The Tongue Speaks Life or Death

Proverbs 18:21 says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." Our words have the power to bring life, healing, and blessing, or death, destruction, and cursing. We must be mindful of the words we speak, as they can have a profound impact on ourselves and those around us.

The Tongue Represents the Heart

Jesus taught that "out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). Our words are a reflection of what's in our heart. If our heart is filled with love, kindness, and compassion, our words will reflect those qualities. On the other hand, if our heart is filled with bitterness, anger, and resentment, our words will reflect those negative emotions.

Diseases of the Tongue

The Bible identifies several "diseases" of the tongue that we must be aware of:

• Excessive talking (Proverbs 10:19, James 3:8): Talking too much can lead to sin and harm others.

• Idle or careless words (Matthew 5:37, 12:36): Speaking without thinking can lead to hurtful and damaging words.

• Gossip (Leviticus 19:16, Proverbs 18:8, 20:19): Spreading rumors and secrets can harm others and damage relationships.

• Lying (Proverbs 6:16-19, 12:22, Revelation 21:8): Speaking falsehoods can lead to destruction and separation from God.

• Flattery (Psalm 12:1-3, Proverbs 26:28, 29:5): Speaking insincere praise can lead to manipulation and harm.

• Hastiness of speech (Proverbs 29:20): Speaking without thinking can lead to regret and harm.

• Murmuring or complaining (Exodus 16:7, Numbers 14:27, 16:11): Speaking negatively can lead to a critical and bitter spirit.

• Criticism, accusation, or judging (Matthew 7:1-2, Luke 6:37, John 7:24): Speaking against others can lead to condemnation and harm.

The Root of Every Problem

The root of every problem affecting our tongue is in our heart. Jesus taught that "out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies" (Matthew 15:19). If we want to speak life and blessing, we must first deal with the issues of our heart.

The Purpose of the Tongue

The Bible identifies two primary purposes of the tongue:

1. To glorify God: Our words should bring honor and praise to God.

2. To share the Good News: Our words should be used to share the Gospel and bring others to Christ.

The Importance of Confession

Confession means "to say the same as." When we confess our sins, we are agreeing with God about our wrongdoing. When we confess God's Word, we are agreeing with His truth and promises.

Creating with Our Words

Jesus taught that "whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Matthew 16:19, 18:18). Our words have the power to create reality and bring heaven's will to earth.

God Creates with Words

In Romans 4:17, we read that God "calls those things which do not exist as though they did." God creates reality with His words, and we are called to do the same.

Decreeing and Confessing

When we decree (claim, call, confess) a thing, it will be established (given) to us. Jesus taught that "whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith" (Mark 11:23).

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Our words have the power to shape our destiny. What we say shall come to pass. We speak our own destiny. This is why it's crucial to speak life, blessing, and positivity, rather than death, cursing, and negativity.

Words Carry Substance

Words carry substance and have an assignment. They can loose angels or demons to fulfill the assignment. When we speak, we are either agreeing with God and His angels or with the devil and his demons. This is why it's essential to choose our words carefully and speak in line with God's Word.
