Title: The Name of Jesus – 6
“The Power of the Name”
Text: Philippians 2:9-11
Before we begin on this morning’s message, I want to share a prayer with you from Paul that I already shared with you at the beginning of this series. It is a powerful prayer and applicable to each of us that is setting here this morning.
I. PAUL’S PRAYER
Paul was praying a prayer for the Church at Ephesus in the first chapter of Ephesians. He wanted them to see something, to understand something. So, he prayed that the eyes of their spirit would be enlightened to truths that they would never be able to figure out in their heads. I want to read that prayer to you because it is the same prayer that I have for us at Calvary concerning the Name and the power behind it.
Ephesians 1:17-23; “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.”
Paul’s prayer was not just for the Church at Ephesus. This is a Spirit-given prayer. It belongs to believers everywhere. It is a prayer that the eyes of our spirits might be enlightened to some things. Paul did not ask that the eyes of our minds would be opened, he said the eyes of our spirits. We have to get the knowledge of God’s Word down in our spirits, our hearts, down on the inside. We cannot get it with our mentality. Our minds are not great enough to grasp it. God wants us to know some things in our hearts. According to this prayer, what does He want us to know? I am glad you asked.
➢ The riches of our inheritance
➢ The exceeding greatness of His power to us who believe
➢ Christ was raised from the dead and set Him in the heavenly places far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named
➢ He has put all things under His feet
➢ Christ is the head over all things to or for the church
Paul’s prayer is that the Church would understand the inheritance that they have, which we have already covered in this series. He wants us to understand what we have in the Name of Jesus. I can preach this message series for the next year or two. I could tell you of all the mighty things that God wants to do in your life. I could tell you that we have all power and authority in the Name of Jesus, but I have come to realization that I can preach until I am blue in the face and sometimes I do, but until God opens the eyes of your understanding, you will never truly get it. You have a power inside you that you have never unleashed simply because you always say, “Whatever God’s will is, let it be.” God’s will is always found in His Word. It is time that we stop setting around waiting for God’s will to happen in our lives and start taking some action and getting in the Word to find out what His will is exactly. Then stand on those promises forever. Remember, the only thing that activates God’s will and God’s power in your life is faith.
Remember what Peter said in Acts 3:16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong.” His name was not enough to heal the beggar at the Gate Beautiful, Peter had to have faith in that Name. You cannot tell me that what I am preaching is wrong because I know from experience that it works. The man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument. Go ahead and argue with me if you want to, but God will heal you if you are willing to stand on the Word and believe it. Faith is what activates miracles.
