THE POWER OF HUMBLE TRUST

Luke 7:1-10

Introduction:

As we celebrate Mother's Day, we remember the love, sacrifices, and humility of mothers. Mothers often show us what humble trust looks like- Trusting in God's plan even when things are uncertain and relying on His grace. Just like a mother's quiet confidence can bring comfort and strength to her family, trusting Jesus with humility can help us understand His mercy and power better. This morning, we will learn how humble trust can truly change our lives.

In this story, we see a special example of trust that goes beyond social rules and pride. The centurion, a man in charge, recognizes that Jesus has divine power and humbly asks for help. He believes that if Jesus speaks a word, his servant will be healed. Jesus is impressed by his faith, saying it is greater than anything He has seen in Israel. As we think about this story, let’s ask ourselves how trusting Jesus with humility can make our faith stronger, especially when we need help. Just like a mother’s trust keeps her family strong, our humble trust in Jesus can help us face life’s difficulties with confidence and hope.

Luke 7:1-3

Humbly trust in Jesus’…

1. Authority over our needs.

We see an example of humble trust when the centurion comes to Jesus. The centurion believes Jesus has the power to heal just by speaking a word. He doesn’t demand or doubt; but shows humility and trust that Jesus has authority over his needs. This reminds us that Jesus is in control of every part of our lives, including our biggest needs. Practically, it means we should come to Jesus with humble hearts, trusting that He knows what’s best and has the power to help us in His perfect time. Instead of trying to handle everything ourselves or doubting He will do something, we should trust in His divine authority.

In our daily lives, trusting Jesus’ authority means we let go of trying to control everything ourselves and instead place our needs in His hands. It’s about depending on Him rather than our own strength. Whether we are struggling with money, health, or relationships, we are called to come to Jesus in faith, trusting that He can and will help us. This attitude of humility helps us grow closer to Him and gives us peace even when things are difficult. When we trust Jesus’ authority over our needs, we learn to rely less on what we can do and more on His power and grace. This leads us to live with faith, humility, and confidence in His love and control.

2. Compassion beyond social barriers.

The centurion shows a deep act of humble trust in Jesus. He recognizes Jesus’ authority and power, not acting as if he deserves anything from Him. The Bible teaches us that Jesus is open to everyone who comes to Him with humility, no matter their social status or background. For us, this means we should trust Jesus completely, admit that we need Him, and come to Him with honest hearts. When we do this with humility, we open the way for Jesus to help, heal, and work in our lives. It reminds us that our faith should be based on trusting Jesus, not on our own pride or strength. When we humbly trust Jesus, we can experience His love and power more fully and learn to rely on Him instead of ourselves.

The story also shows that Jesus’ love goes beyond social barriers. He is willing to help and show kindness to those who are often overlooked or considered different. Practically, this means that we should do the same- Reach out with kindness and love to people of all backgrounds, races, and social statuses. Theologically, it reminds us that God’s mercy and salvation are available to everyone who trusts in Jesus with humility. In our daily lives, this calls us to look past superficial differences and build real relationships with others. When we show love across social barriers, we demonstrate what it means to follow Jesus and reflect God’s kingdom here on earth.

3. Understanding of genuine faith.

Jesus praised the faith of the centurion because he showed humility and truly understood that Jesus had all authority and power. The centurion’s respectful request for help showed he trusted Jesus not because he thought he deserved it, but because he believed in Jesus’ divine power. This teaches us that real faith means trusting Jesus completely, recognizing that we can't do everything on our own. When we humble ourselves and acknowledge Jesus’ authority, we can confidently come to Him, knowing He is able to help us in every situation.

Practically, understanding genuine faith means checking our own hearts- Are we approaching Jesus with humility, trusting Him more than our own strength? Humble trust involves giving up our need to control everything and relying fully on His mercy and power. It encourages us to depend on Jesus instead of ourselves, helping us grow closer to Him. When we trust Jesus humbly, we open ourselves to His transforming work in our lives, making us more open to His guidance and more confident that He can work miracles in our circumstances. True faith like this not only changes us but also shows others how powerful humble trust in Jesus can be.
