This sermon explores the powerful faith of Jabez as demonstrated in his prayer. It focuses on five key points: 1. Jabez's life was defined by his faith. 2. Jabez prayed for blessings from God. 3. Jabez desired more than his current circumstances. 4. Jabez sought the presence of God in his life. 5. Jabez asked for God's protection.
The Faith of Jabez
Did you know that God never meant for us to live an average life? He wants us to live above the norm, to excel and succeed. Each one of us is unique and special in His eyes. In the midst of a long list of genealogies in 1 Chronicles 4, God singles out a man named Jabez for special recognition. Although there are only two verses in the Bible that mention his name, they reveal a lot about Jabez and provide valuable lessons for us.
The first lesson we learn from Jabez is that he had a life of faith. Jabez called on the God of Israel, showing his trust and belief in God's power. James 1:5-8 reminds us that when we pray, we should do so in faith, without doubting. Jabez's simple prayer demonstrated his faith, and God heard and answered him.
The second lesson is that Jabez prayed for God's blessings. He asked God to bless him abundantly. It is not wrong to ask God for blessings because it is His nature to want to bless His people. In Genesis 12:2-3, God promises to bless Abraham and make him a great nation. Ephesians 1:3 also tells us that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ. We can confidently ask God for His blessings, knowing that He desires to bless us.
The third lesson is that Jabez prayed for more. He asked God to enlarge his territory, to give him more land. By praying this way, Jabez demonstrated his trust in God's provision and his willingness to let God be in control. When we pray for more, we are taking the limits off God and allowing Him to work in our lives according to His plans and purposes.
The fourth lesson is that Jabez prayed for God's presence in his life. He asked for God's hand to be with him, guiding and protecting him. The hand of God represents His power and care. When God's hand is upon us, we can be assured of His presence and protection. Psalm 37:23-25 assures us that the steps of a righteous person are established by the Lord, and He will not forsake us.
The fifth and final lesson is that Jabez prayed for God's protection. He asked God to keep him from harm and pain. Sin is the worst evil that can cause pain and disrupt our relationship with God and others. Jabez recognized this and sought God's protection from evil. We can also pray for God's protection, knowing that He is able to deliver us from evil and keep us safe.
In conclusion, Jabez's faith and prayers serve as an example for us to live above the norm. We should pray in faith, asking God for His blessings, for more of His provision, for His presence in our lives, and for His protection from evil. When we pray in alignment with God's desires, He will grant us what we request. Let us walk in faith and pray with confidence, knowing that God is able to exceed our expectations. Amen.
