Series: Jesus- Son Of Man [#23]

THE POWER OF COMPASSION

Luke 7:11-17

Introduction:

Today, as we continue our series "Jesus- Son of Man," we are reminded of how deep Jesus’ compassion is and how much He loves those who are hurting. In our text, we read about a sad moment in the town of Nain. Jesus sees a woman who is very upset because her only son has died. Jesus feels moved with compassion, and He does something amazing- He touches the coffin and tells the young man to get up. This miracle shows us that Jesus has power, but it also shows us how much He cares for people. Today, we’ll learn how Jesus’ loving heart gives hope and brings new life, and how we are called to show that same compassion to others.

Compassion is more than just feeling sorry for someone. It is a strong feeling that makes us want to help and show love. The story in Luke 7 shows us that Jesus’ compassion is active- It changes lives and gives hope where there is sadness and death. As we think about this miracle, let’s ask ourselves how Jesus’ compassion can inspire us to notice the pain around us and to do something kind. In a World that often ignores suffering, the love and kindness of Jesus can be a light that brings healing and new beginnings. Today, let’s open our hearts to Jesus’ example and ask Him to help us show His compassion to others every day.

Luke 7:11-13

The power of compassion…

1. Moves us beyond our comfort zones.

The power of compassion calls us to go beyond what is easy and comfortable. When Jesus sees the widow mourning her son, He feels deep compassion and acts to bring her son back to life. This shows us that true compassion is not just feeling sorry for someone but actually doing something to help. Practically, this means we should be willing to show kindness, give our time, and share what we have with others, even if it means stepping out of our usual routines or comfort. It’s about caring for others in real ways, just like Jesus did, and showing love that goes beyond words.

Spiritually, when we practice compassion, our hearts become more like Jesus, the Son of Man who shows us perfect mercy. Moving beyond our comfort zones helps us join God’s work of love and healing in the World. It encourages us to look for ways to help others, (whether through listening, serving, or helping in small ways) and to do it with humility. The power of compassion not only brings hope and comfort to others but also makes our faith stronger. It reminds us that Jesus’ compassion is what keeps us going and helps us show His love to a hurting World.

Luke 7:14-15

The power of compassion…

2. Restores hope in desperate situations.

The power of compassion teaches us that true mercy from God can bring hope back to people who are in very difficult situations. When Jesus saw the widow crying over her dead son, He was moved with compassion and touched the coffin. Because of His love, the young man was brought back to life. This shows that compassion is more than just a feeling; it is a powerful action that can turn despair into hope and bring life where there was only death. For us today, loving like Jesus means reaching out to others when they are hurting, trusting that God's compassion can help bring hope to even the most hopeless situations, (whether in individuals, families, or communities).

Practically, this reminds us to show compassion in our everyday lives, especially when we see others suffering. It calls us to go beyond just feeling sorry and to do something kind and caring. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference and help bring hope where there was once only despair. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be His hands and feet- Visiting the hurting, helping those in need, and showing love in tough times. When we do this, we join God in His work of restoring hope and bringing new life, proving that through compassion, even the darkest situations can be made bright again.

Luke 7:16-17

The power of compassion…

3. Demonstrates the authority and identity of Jesus.

This story shows us that Jesus’ act of compassion is very powerful. When Jesus raises the widow’s son from the dead, it proves that He has authority over death and that He is truly the Son of God. This moment reveals that Jesus’ compassion is connected to His divine power to give life and bring hope. For us as believers, understanding this helps us see Jesus not only as a loving Savior but also as the one with the authority to help us in our hardest times. It reminds us that true compassion isn’t just an emotion- It is part of Jesus’ divine power to bring new life and hope to those who need it most.
