Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explore our identity in Christ, how to live out our calling as God's chosen people, and the power of unity in Christ.
Good morning, church! It's a blessing to be gathered here together, as one body, to delve into the Word of God. I'm excited today to talk about a topic that's close to my heart and I believe, critical to our walk as Christians. Today we're going to be talking about our identity in Christ, how to live out our calling as God's people, and the power of unity in Christ.
Before we dive in, let's look together at the scripture that will guide our discussion today, from 1 Peter 2:9-10:
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy."
Isn't that beautiful? It's a reminder of who we are and what we're here for.
Realizing our identity in Christ is a process that fundamentally changes how we view ourselves and our place in the world. It is not just about acknowledging that we are Christians, but truly understanding what it means to be a part of the body of Christ. This realization is not a one-time event, but an ongoing journey of discovery and growth.
Understanding our value in God's eyes: The scripture we read earlier from 1 Peter 2:9 tells us that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and God’s special possession. These are not just empty words, but a profound declaration of our worth. We are chosen by God, not because of anything we have done, but simply because of His love for us. We are royal, not because of any earthly status or achievement, but because we are children of the King of Kings. We are holy, not because of our own righteousness, but because we have been sanctified by the blood of Jesus. And we are God’s special possession, treasured and loved by our Creator.
Understanding our purpose: Again, 1 Peter 2:9 tells us that we are chosen so that we may declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light. Our purpose, therefore, is not to pursue our own ambitions or desires, but to glorify God and make His love known to the world. This purpose gives our lives meaning and direction, and it is only when we align our lives with this purpose that we find true fulfillment and joy.
Understanding our position in relation to God and others: In Christ, we are not just individuals, but part of a larger body. We are interconnected with other believers, sharing in their joys and struggles, and working together to fulfill our collective purpose. This sense of community and unity is a vital part of our identity in Christ, and it challenges us to look beyond our own needs and interests, and to consider the needs and interests of others.
Understanding our potential: In Christ, we are not limited by our own abilities or resources, but we have access to the limitless power and resources of God. This means that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). It also means that we have the potential to grow and change, to overcome our weaknesses and failures, and to become more like Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions.
Realizing these truths is not just about intellectual understanding. It involves a deep, personal experience of God's love and grace, and a daily surrender to His will and His ways.
