The Overflowing Anointing

Study Text: Psalm 23:1-6

Introduction

- Beloved, Psalm 23 is not just a psalm for funerals, it is a psalm for fullness.

- David is not singing about death here, but about divine abundance. He says, “Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”

- The oil in Scripture represents the Holy Spirit, the power of God, the favour of the Father. When God anoints your head with oil, it changes your destiny, it lifts your level, and it overflows into every area of your life.

- We will examine this topic under three subheadings. May the Spirit of God anoint these words to our hearts.

1. The Source of the Anointing

2. The Strength of the Anointing

3. The Satisfaction of the Anointing

1. The Source of the Anointing

- “Thou anointest.” The anointing doesn’t come from man, methods, or machinery. It comes from the Master Himself.

- Prophets may pour the oil, but only God provides the power.

- Saul was anointed by Samuel, but rejected by God. David was chosen and anointed by God Himself.

- The true source of power in ministry, in life, in destiny is the Holy Spirit.

- A light bulb shines not because of the bulb itself but because of the electricity flowing through it. So also, we shine only because God is the source.

- Oil in Scripture carries deep meanings:

i. Sanctification: to set apart for God’s use. Kings, priests, and prophets were anointed.

ii. Strength: the Spirit empowers us to do what flesh cannot.

iii. Sufficiency: oil in the widow’s jar never ran dry (2 Kings 4).

Shield: shepherds used oil to protect sheep from insects and wounds.

- Beloved, when God anoints you, He protects you, He provides for you, and He empowers you.

2. The Strength of the Anointing

David says: “My head.”

- Why the head? Because the head is the seat of thought, decision, and destiny.

- God anoints your mind – giving wisdom, creativity, and clarity.

- God anoints your heart – filling it with joy and peace.

- God anoints your hands – enabling fruitful labour.

- When Bezaleel was anointed, he received divine skill to build the tabernacle (Exodus 31:3). God’s anointing affects not just your prayers but your practical work.

- Isaiah 10:27 says, “The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.”

i. The anointing breaks yokes – addiction, oppression, depression.

ii. The anointing builds boldness – Peter went from coward to courageous preacher after Pentecost.

iii. The anointing brings breakthroughs – David defeated Goliath because of divine empowerment.

iv. The anointing bestows blessings – it is contagious, overflowing into your family, your business, your ministry.

- Beloved, the anointing makes the difference!

3. The Satisfaction of the Anointing

David concludes: “My cup runneth over.”

- The anointing brings abundance – no lack.

- The anointing brings overflow – more than enough.

- The anointing brings joy – joy unspeakable and full of glory.

- At Cana of Galilee, Jesus turned water into wine, not just enough, but more than enough. When God blesses, He blesses in overflow!

Conclusion

- David’s testimony is ours today: “Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”

The Source is God. The Strength breaks yokes and brings breakthroughs. The Satisfaction is overflow and abundance.

- Beloved, the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the anointing. The difference between failure and favour is the anointing. The difference between dryness and overflow is the anointing.

- Do you desire the anointing? Ask God afresh today. Depend not on yourself but on the Anointer.

- Demonstrate the anointing by living a Spirit-filled life.

- May your head never lack oil! May your cup never run dry! May your life overflow with the anointing of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name. Amen.
