The Name of Jesus

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the Name of Jesus that is above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of God the father.” Philippians 2:9, 10

What is it about the name of Jesus that makes it so special?

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name of Jesus that is above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father.” WOW! He has been given an extra ordinary name above every name. Scripture says there is none other name given among men whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus Himself said if ye ask anything in my Name I will do it” (John 14:14 KJV). The previous verse says “and I will do whatever you ask in my Name so that the Father may be glorified.”

When we pray, do we pray to Jesus? The answer is found in Scripture. “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name…” (Matthew 6:9). We do not pray to Mary, or to the Holy Spirit, or to Jesus. But we are told to pray in Jesus’ Name.

So what do we ask for? A million dollars? The lottery? An outlandish request that would not be good for us in the long run? I John 5:14 says, “this is the confidence that we have toward him that if we ask anything according to this will he hears us and if we know that he hears us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” What things are promised us in scripture? Is it covered? What does it say about things that are not covered?

When you have an insurance policy you need to read carefully to see if there are things that are excluded in the policy that we might overlook. When we go to make a claim, they might tell us, “Oh didn’t you know? That’s not covered in your policy.” James 4:3 says, “When you ask, you do not receive because you ask amiss with the wrong motives.”

There are many scriptures that indicate what is His will to do for us that are definite promises. Salvation and healing and provision are included in this along with examples where he did things for people—healing, feeing the 5000, bringing salvation to people. “He is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” is one of the ones for salvation. (II Peter 3:9). Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Matthew 6:31 tells us about provision and tells us not to worry for the Lord knows that we need these things. In another place in Psalm 34:10, “The young lions do lack and suffer hunger but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.”

There are dozens of healing scriptures throughout the Old and New Testaments that show us His will to heal and help us to walk in wellness. The two that come to mind most frequently are, “by his stripes ye are healed” (II Peter 2:24) and “I am the Lord that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26). But there are many more than just these two to substantiate the fact of his will to heal us. So this is just three categories showing what God’s will is as far as salvation, provision, and healing.

In preparing his disciples to us his name, he told them, “Up to this point you have not asked anything in my name but this is going to change. John 16:24 “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”

Jesus told his disciples, “and I will do whatever you ask in my name that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name” (John 14:13 NIV). Again he specifically says to ask in his name. Do you have the promise to stand on? Check out the scripture that you can say. I know for sure that it is his will and that I am not asking amiss.

Then Jesus went on to tell them that he was equipping them with his authority and his power to get the job done. Luke 9:1 says, he sent out the 12 and “gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases and to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
