Summary: I love people who overcome excuses. If anyone had a reason not to “give,” it was this woman. The widow’s might… she shuts down everyone else’s excuse!

Title:

“The Widow’s Might”

Introduction: Jesus had just warned the people about the leaven of the Pharisees. They looked religious on outward appearance, but God looks upon the heart of a man. Thus our text begins. Here the widow woman is used by Christ to illustrate the kind of Christian that God wants us to be.

One note about the tithe. Read Lev. 27:30. The tithe of the field is the Lord’s. I submit that the tithe of every field is the Lord’s. That makes tithing relevant for today. Think about it.

It should almost be noted that this text is not really teaching the principle of tithing, it is teaching the principle of giving.

I love people who overcome excuses. If anyone had a reason not to “give,” it was this woman.

The widow’s might… she shuts down everyone else’s excuse!

Excuse 1. I don’t have much to give.

She had only to copper coins she could put in the offering.

2. What I have to give won’t help much.

I remind you that little is much when God is in it.

3. All that Church talks about is money.

As far as I can tell by the context, giving money was the only thing that the people were there for in the Temple on that day.

4. The Church leaders spend the money unwisely

Jesus had just said that the Pharisees were devouring widow’s houses.

5. It doesn’t matter to God what I put into the offering plate.

Please note that in the context, Jesus noted who was giving what in the offering plate.

6. God hasn’t been good to me lately.

She was a widow. She could have been angry at God.

7. The Church ought to be giving money to me instead.

The church ought to take care of the widows in their affliction, instead she was taking care of the church!

Conclusion: Let’s take up an offering!
