The marriage miracle

John 2:1--22

Some people believe with all the technology advances and scientific advances we have today that miracles do not occur. Some people look at the laws of the universe and they make the decision that there is no God and everything is like a mechanism.

A strange thing has happened in our day on the way to the science lab. Some people have come to understand that human beings have needs in life which neither science nor technology can solve. We have come to believe and understand that there are some needs, some things that the human heart desires that science is not able to supply. Example, science can put lights in your house, but science can’t put love. Technology can put pictures in your house but technology cannot put peace. There are some human needs of the heart that science and technology cannot fulfill. I believe in miracles.

I believe that God created this universe according to certain laws and when we see the laws of the universe we see God’s usual action. These laws cannot be broken. You remember I mentioned about the law of gravity? You cannot break the law of gravity. You can jump from a tall building and break your neck. All you have done then is to demonstrate gravity, you haven’t broken God’s law of gravity. So the laws God created in His universe is His usual action. Now on the other hand, miracles are God’s unusual action. Law is God doing the ordinary. Miracle is God doing the extraordinary. A miracle is God doing what He chooses to do with His own universe. That is the best definition I have been able to come up with. What you believe about a miracle ultimately is determined by what you believe about God. If you believe Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" then you can believe any miracle that is given to us in the pages of the Bible.

Christianity is a miracle faith. If you take the miracles out of the Christian faith then you don’t have Christianity any more. Christianity believes in a miracle book. I was reading the other day about Gideon. The Bible says that an angel appeared to Gideon and then Gideon said, "Where be all the miracles?" Now isn’t that an amazing thing? There was an angel standing in front of him and He wants to know where all the miracles are. If you have a copy of the Bible in your hand, you have a reason to believe in miracles because the book you hold is a miracle book. The Christian faith has a miracle book.

Then we believe in a miracle experience. We believe that a person can experience a miracle salvation. Before long we will be baptizing some miracles God performed. Every time you see somebody saved, you are in the presence of a miracle. If you have received Jesus as your Savior, you are a walking, living miracle. The Christian faith is a miracle faith because we have a miracle book. Because we have a miracle salvation and because we have a miracle Saviour.

The Gospel of John is very particular in the way it deals with the miracles of Jesus. The Holy Spirit led John to select seven particular miracles and there was a reason why He selected those seven miracles. Turn to John 20:30--31 and He will tell you why He gave these seven particular miracles so the purpose of miracles is that you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

Let’s look at a miracle at Cana. The first point I bring to your attention is "The marriage." Look at verse 2. Now there’s something pretty interesting here. The first miracle occurred in a humble place. It occurred in a little hill village called Cana. Have you ever wondered why Jesus did not choose a much larger place to perform His first miracle? I believe the Lord is doing miracles in little places we haven’t heard about. The most important things that are taking place as not what you read about in your morning news papers. I believe the most important things are taking place in humble homes in our land. Jesus works in humble places.

It’s also a very happy place because the Bible says there is a marriage going on there. A marriage is always a happy time. Also marriage is a serious time. The second most important decision you’ll ever make in your life is the decision of who you are going to spend the rest of your life with. Of course the number one is to receive Jesus as your Saviour. Young people, pray and ask God to give you a Christian mate. It’s very serious time. Don’t you go out and marry a heathen. You will want to go to church and serve Jesus and that heathen will want to serve world.
