INTRODUCTION:
In today’s world, the term “Christian” is widely used but often misunderstood. Many carry the name, but few truly bear the nature. A true Christian is not known merely by title or church attendance but by a life that reflects Christ's character and teachings. Christianity is more than a religion—it is a lifestyle rooted in transformation by the Holy Spirit.
The Bible does not leave us in doubt about what marks a true follower of Christ. Jesus Himself said we would be known by our fruits (Matthew 7:20). Our attitudes, speech, conduct, and love must all align with the example of Christ. A true Christian displays inner transformation that results in visible outward fruit.
In this sermon, we will explore several marks that distinguish a true Christian. These signs serve as a mirror for self-examination and a call to higher spiritual living.
1. GENUINE LOVE FOR OTHERS
True Christians love sacrificially, sincerely, and without hypocrisy.
a) Love Must Be Sincere
Let love be without hypocrisy, hating evil and clinging to good (Romans 12:9).
b) Love One Another Deeply
True love among believers involves commitment and brotherly affection (1 John 3:18).
c) Forgive and Show Grace
A real Christian forgives freely and refuses to keep records of wrongs (Ephesians 4:32).
d) Love Even Your Enemies
This sets Christians apart—responding to hate with love (Matthew 5:44).
Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30–37) exemplified genuine, sacrificial love beyond racial and social boundaries.
2. CONSISTENT CHRISTLIKE CHARACTER
A true Christian walks daily in the fruit of the Spirit.
a) The Fruit of the Spirit is Evident
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).
b) Holiness is Pursued Daily
They strive for moral purity and godly conduct (1 Peter 1:15-16).
c) Humility Marks Their Lives
They are not proud but walk in meekness and humility (Philippians 2:3-4).
d) Their Words Reflect Grace
A true believer speaks life-giving words, seasoned with grace (Colossians 4:6).
Biblical Example: Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, reflected Christ even while being stoned (Acts 7:54–60).
3. A LIFE OF OBEDIENCE TO GOD
True Christians submit to God's Word and will, even when it's not convenient.
a) Obedience Shows Love
“If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
b) Not Hearers Only, But Doers
They act on the Word they hear (James 1:22–25).
c) They Walk in God’s Will
Not seeking their own way, but yielding to God's purpose (Romans 12:2).
d) They Endure with Patience
Even under pressure or persecution, they stand firm in obedience (Hebrews 10:36).
Biblical Example: Noah obeyed God’s instructions faithfully, even when it made no sense to others (Genesis 6:13–22).
4. ACTIVE FAITH AND WITNESS
True Christians boldly share the Gospel and live by faith in all circumstances.
a) Faith That Works Through Love
Their faith results in actions, not just beliefs (Galatians 5:6).
b) They Shine as Light in Darkness
Like a city on a hill, they point others to Jesus (Matthew 5:14–16).
c) Boldness in Sharing the Gospel
They are not ashamed to be identified with Christ (Romans 1:16).
d) They Rejoice Even in Trials
True Christians see trials as opportunities to trust God more (1 Peter 1:6–7).
Biblical Example: The woman at the well, after her encounter with Jesus, went and evangelised her entire city (John 4:28–30).
CONCLUSION:
Being a true Christian is not about appearance but about authentic transformation and daily living in obedience, love, and faith. The world is watching, and more importantly, God is watching. Let your life testify of Christ, not just your words. These marks are not optional—they are essential.
May you examine your life by these marks. Where you fall short, seek the help of the Holy Spirit. God is not looking for perfection, but for sincerity and growth. True Christianity is a call to a higher life—a life that glorifies God and draws others to Him.
