The Many Names Of Jesus Lesson 1

1. Jesus is His human name. “You . . . shall call His name Jesus” (Luke 1:37). It comes from the Hebrew, Joshua, “Jehovah is salvation.”

2. Christ is His cross name. The Greek title Christ comes from the Hebrew Messiah. It means anointed. “Messiah . . . who is called the Christ” (John 4:25). “Jesus who is called the Christ” (Matt. 1:16).

3. Lord is His name of deity. “The name of the Lord Jesus was magnified” (Acts 19:17).

a. His human name Jesus is emphasized in the gospels.

b. His deity title Lord is emphasized in Acts.

c. His office position Christ is emphasized in the epistles.

4. King. “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him” (Matt. 2:2).

5. Servant. “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Servanthood is the key to spirituality. “And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ‘If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all’” (Mark 9:35).

6. Son of Man. “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). The title Jesus used for Himself more than any other. It showed His humanity.

7. I Am. This is a unique title for Jesus I Am. It is a reference to His deity. A derivative from the Hebrew Jehovah, which comes from the verb first person “to be,” i.e., I Am, I Am. “And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM’” (Exodus 3:14). The eighth I Am in John, “I AM, I AM,” i.e., “I am He” (John 18:5). Eight is the number of the New Birth or New Beginning.

8. The first begotten of the dead (Rev. 1:5). Jesus was the first to rise, a prediction that we will also arise from the dead. A name of physical hope.

9. Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end (Rev. 1:8). Links Jesus’ sovereignty over history past and present. A specific statement of Jesus’ eternality.

10. Immanuel. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isa. 7:14). The name Immanuel means “God with us.”

11. The Word. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).

a. This title reflects incarnation, the miracle of God becoming human flesh. This happened at conception.

b. Jesus is called The Word because: He communicates God to us and He defines what God is like.

12. Wonderful. “His name shall be called Wonderful” (Isa. 9:6).

a. The “son is given” – supernatural, and “the child is born” – natural.

b. This wonderful is a noun, not an adjective.

c. Wonderful is a title for miracles, i.e., “signs and wonders,” Jesus is omnipotent.

d. Wonderful refers to mystery or secret.

e. Wonderful refers to majesty, i.e., “Worship His majesty.”

13. Counselor. “His name shall be called . . . Counselor.”

a. Refers to one who advises or helps solve our problems.

b. Christ is the source of all wisdom (Prov. 8:14; 1 Cor. 1:30).

14. Mighty God. “His name shall be called . . . mighty God.” Jesus will be El Gibbor referring to using His power for His people.

15. The Everlasting Father. He shall be called . . . everlasting Father.”

a. Jesus is separate from the Father, “Equal in nature, separate in person, submissive in duties.”

b. Means “Father of eternity” as a founding father, i.e., the one beginning a movement. Jesus establishes eternal life for those who believe.

16. The Prince of Peace.

a. Jesus is a prince who will ascend the throne in the future. Technically Jesus is not yet the King who will rule in the millennium.

b. Refers to Jesus making peace between God and man (Eph. 2:15).

c. Refers to inner peace He gives us (Eph. 2:14).

17. The Son of God. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18).

a. A reference to Jesus’ deity and sinless nature.

b. The personification of God Himself.

18. The Son of Man. “No one has ascended to Heaven but He who came down from Heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in Heaven” (John 3:13). Jesus’ favorite name for Himself (no one else called Him this). Jesus acquired something He never had before, a human nature.

19. His Son. “God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world” (John 3:1). Refers to Jesus’ special relationship to the Father. Jesus calls Himself Son ten times in John 5:19-27.
