Summary: Psalm 29 is a beautiful hymn of praise to God for His power and majesty revealed voice in nature. It is a great opportunity to reflect on the sovereignty of God and the power of His word. It also includes His promise, for His people; He will give them strength and peace.

Have you ever stood in awe of the natural world? The mountains, the oceans, the storms - each displays the power and grandeur of our Creator. Psalm 29 is a poetic call to worship, celebrating the splendor of God's power, especially as revealed through storms. David attributes the power of the thunderstorm to God's voice, making it an invitation to recognize God's sovereignty.

I. The Call to Worship (vs 1-2)

"Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength."

A. Worship God in His Glory: The psalm opens with a call to worship God for His splendor and strength. This is a reminder that true worship involves ascribing all glory and honor to God.

B. Application: Are we worshiping God for who He is - His majesty and power - rather than just for what He can do for us?

II. The Voice of the LORD in the storm (vs 3-9)

"The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders..."

A. God's power over nature: The psalmist describes God's voice as commanding and powerful, shaking the earth, making the trees tremble, even breaking the cedars. The storm imagery shows God's supreme control over creation.

1. The storms and their power: Lightning, thunder, and the winds are all instruments of God's mighty voice

2. The impact of God's voice: It's not just a force; it's a voice that shapes the world. Creation responds to the word of God with awe and trembling.

B. Application: When life feels like a storm, we can remember that God is in control. His voice holds power over everything, and nothing is beyond His reach.

III. The Sovereignty of God Over Creation (vs 10-11)

"The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever."

A. God's Eternal Rule: Even in the midst of the storm, God remains on His throne. The flood refers to the great Flood in Genesis, reminding us that God's rule transcends time and history.

B. God's Peace for His People: While storms rage, God offers peace and strength to his His people. His power ensures that the storms do not have the final word.

- God's authority over chaos: In the ancient world, water and storms represented chaos. But God's rule is absolute; He brings order to chaos.

C. Application: In a world that often feels out of control, God's sovereignty is a comfort. He reigns over everything - past, present and future.

IV. The Response of the People of God (vs 9-11)

"The voice of the LORD...and in His temple all cry GLORY!"

A. Worship in Response to God's Power: The psalm concludes with the earth and creation responding to God's voice. The people of God also are to respond in worship.

1. Ascribing Glory: The voice of God brings order and beauty; it is our response of worship that acknowledges and honors His rule

2. Strength and Power: God's people are called to live in the peace that comes from recognizing God's power and presence.

3. The Final Promise: The psalm concludes with a promise; "The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace." Those that truly follow the LORD will receive strength and peace as only the one and true God can give.

B. Application: Our response to God's voice should be one of reverence and trust. When we hear God's call through His word, we are invited to live lives that reflect His majesty and power.

Conclusion:

The psalm calls us to recognize the grandeur of God's power and to worship Him for who He is, not just for what He does. In every storm, whether literal of metaphorical, God's voice reigns supreme. Let us be mindful of the awe-inspiring power of God. As we face our own storms in life, may we rest in the peace that comes from knowing the Creator. He is sovereign over all things.
