God's unfailing love and protection are promised to those who trust in Him.

Introduction

Good morning, family! Today, we are going to dive into a beautiful passage of Scripture that is both a comfort and a reminder of God's unfailing protection and security in our lives. I'm talking about Psalm 91, which has been affectionately called "The Lord is Our Fortress." In this Psalm, we not only see God's promise of protection but also the power of prayer when we trust in Him.

I think Charles Spurgeon said it best when he wrote, "How could any arrows, how could any pestilence, ever be able to reach the secure abode of God? If you dwell there, you are invincible, invulnerable, infinitely secure."

Our Fortress

The Lord is Our Fortress - this statement holds immense power and significance for believers. It is a declaration of faith, a proclamation of trust, and an acknowledgment of the immeasurable strength and protection that God provides for His children. In our passage this morning, we find a beautiful and poetic illustration of this truth, as the psalmist describes the Lord as a refuge and fortress for those who choose to dwell in His presence.

To fully grasp the depth of this concept, we must first understand what it means to have the Lord as our fortress. In ancient times, a fortress was a place of safety and security, a stronghold designed to protect its inhabitants from external threats and attacks. These fortresses were often built with thick walls, high towers, and strategic defenses to ensure the safety of those within. Similarly, when we declare the Lord as our fortress, we are affirming our belief that He is the ultimate source of protection and security in our lives. We are acknowledging that no matter what challenges or dangers we may face, we can find refuge and safety in His presence.

Assurance of His presence: In Psalm 91:1, we read, "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." This verse paints a vivid picture of the intimate relationship we can have with God when we choose to dwell in His presence. By abiding in the secret place of the Most High, we are enveloped in His protective shadow, a place where we can find comfort and rest from the storms of life. This constant presence of God in our lives serves as a reminder that we are never alone, and that He is always watching over us, ready to defend and protect us from harm.

Deliverance from the snares of the enemy: In verse 3, the psalmist writes, "Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence." The enemy is constantly seeking to ensnare and entrap us, using various tactics and strategies to bring us down. However, when we trust in the Lord as our fortress, we can have confidence that He will deliver us from these traps and keep us safe from harm. This deliverance is not just a one-time event, but an ongoing process as we continue to walk in faith and trust in God's protection.

He shields us from the dangers of life: In verses 5-6, the psalmist writes, "You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday." God's protection encompasses every aspect of our lives. Whether we face threats in the darkness of night or the brightness of day, we can trust that the Lord is our fortress, shielding us from harm and providing a safe haven for us to rest.

God protects the entire community of faith: In verse 7, we read, "A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you." This verse highlights the collective protection that God provides for His people, as He watches over and defends the entire body of believers. This communal aspect of God's protection serves as a reminder that we are not isolated individuals but part of a larger family of faith, united under the protective wings of our Almighty God.

He empowers us to overcome our enemies: In verses 13-14, the psalmist writes, "You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. 'Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he has known My name.'" These verses reveal that not only does God protect us from harm, but He also enables us to triumph over the forces that seek to destroy us. By trusting in the Lord as our fortress, we are empowered to stand strong in the face of adversity and overcome the obstacles that stand in our way.
