The Load of Your Sin

May 27, 2018 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: When Jesus forgives, He forgives completely!

Focus Passage: Matthew 11:28-30

Supplemental Passage: In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace (Ephesians 1:7 NASB)

Introduction: In the 1986 movie “The Mission,” Robert DeNiro plays a man who wants to become a priest. He has killed his own brother and was formerly a slave trader. The Catholic mission is in 1600’s Brazil which has just been sold from Spain to Portugal. As a penance for his sins, he drags a net that is full of armor, swords, and other very heavy things. His fellow priests entreat him to get rid of this burden, but he doesn’t feel forgiven. Once, a priest takes the rope from him and throws the net down a hill. The man gives him an exhausted look then goes and retrieves the net. Finally, one of the natives gets tired of seeing him struggle, cuts the net from the rope and throws the whole thing off a cliff and into the ocean. It is at this moment that he finally is freed from the “load of his sin.”

f. And you will find rest

III. Learn from Me

a. Be active to learn

b. Not a passive relationship

c. Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established. (Proverbs 16:3 NASB)

d. Don’t just read the Bible; STUDY the Bible!

e. Be like Jesus in all you say and do and even think

Application/Invitation: Listen to the words of Psalm 32:1-5: (A Psalm of David. A Maskil.) How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah. I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah. (Psalms 32:1-5 NASB)

For some, it is the guilt of your own sin that creates the load for you. If Jesus has forgiven your sins, they are truly forgiven. You don’t need to carry around the burden of sins that have already been forgiven. Dump them now! Get rid of them! “build a bridge and get over it!”. Seriously, there is no need to haul around the memory of something that God has completely forgotten. For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." (Romans 10:11 NASB)
