This sermon explores the call to discipleship through self-denial, surrender for the gospel, and sustaining faith, emphasizing a Christ-centered life over self-centeredness.

Introduction

Welcome, beloved brothers and sisters, to this blessed gathering where we come together in unity and love, bound by the common thread of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We gather not as strangers, but as a family, a community knit together by the grace of God, and the shared pursuit of understanding His Word. We are not here by chance, but by divine appointment.

Today, we turn our hearts and minds to the powerful words of Jesus in Matthew 16:24. The Scripture says, 'Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.' These words, though simple in structure, are profound in meaning and transformative in their implications.

As we ponder this Scripture, we are reminded of the words of the esteemed preacher Charles Spurgeon who once said, 'There are no crown-wearers in heaven who were not cross-bearers here below.' Indeed, this is the essence of being a disciple of Christ: to deny oneself, to bear the cross, and to follow Him.

Sacrificing Self for Salvation

In the heart of the Gospel message, we find a call to self-sacrifice. This is a call to a radical shift in our priorities, our desires, and our very identities. To live, not for ourselves, but for Christ.

Jesus Himself lived out this call to self-sacrifice. He left the glory of heaven to walk the dusty roads of earth. He traded the worship of angels for the scorn of men. He exchanged a crown of gold for a crown of thorns. In the same way, we too are called to sacrifice ourselves. But what does this look like in our daily lives? How do we live out this call to self-sacrifice?

Firstly, sacrificing self for salvation means surrendering our will to God's will. It means saying, 'Not my will, but Yours be done.' This is not a one-time decision, but a daily choice. Every day, we are faced with decisions - big and small. In each of these decisions, we have the opportunity to choose our will or God's will. To choose our way or God's way. To choose our desires or God's desires.

Secondly, sacrificing oneself for salvation involves giving up our rights for the sake of others. It means considering others better than ourselves. It means looking not only to our own interests but also to the interests of others. This is not easy. It goes against our natural inclination to look out for ourselves first. But it's what Jesus did. He gave up His rights, His privileges, His very life, for the sake of us.

Thirdly, it requires letting go of our plans and embracing God's plans. It means trusting that God's plans are better than our plans, even when we don't understand them. It means believing that God's ways are higher than our ways, even when they don't make sense.

Lastly, sacrificing self for salvation entails denying our flesh and living by the Spirit. It means saying no to the sinful desires of the flesh and saying yes to the righteous desires of the Spirit. We should be choosing to walk by the Spirit, even when the flesh is pulling us in the opposite direction. We must be living by the Spirit, even when it's hard, even when it's painful, even when it's costly.

In all of these ways, we see that sacrificing self for salvation is not about losing ourselves, but about finding ourselves. It's not about giving up our lives, but about gaining true life. It's not about denying our desires, but about discovering our deepest desires.
