Summary: This sermon deals with the need for "remodeling" our spiritual house.

Largest Room in My House—The room of self-improvement

Home improvement has become a favorite American pastime. Tim Taylor entertains with the topic. Bob Villa gives the how to. Many of us have found satisfaction and frustration on the same project.

ILL. Bought fold out ironing board for Kim…..

Spiritually we can apply some of the same principles to our lives.

I. IT IS A ROOM THAT NEEDS TO BE IDENTIFIED. I JOHN 1:8-9

A) Identified as being sinful.

Many people are living in a lifestyle of sin and have found some way of justifying their sin.

B) Identified as being in need of change.

To confess our sins means that we agree with God about them.

Walk into a room where there is a large whole that has been punched in the wall. “That hole sure needs to be fixed……..yep, sure does.”

II. IT IS A ROOM THAT NEEDS A GOOD CARPENTER. Phil 1:6

A) Jesus saves, the Holy Spirit fills, and the Father will call us home.

B) The carpenter will only be as thorough as we allow him to be.

1) Just as if I were doing carpentry work for you. I would not tear out a wall and remodel a room if you had asked me to simply install a new door. What kind of work are we asking God to do in our life?

2) Ancient Chinese proverb: "If we do not change our direction, we are likely to end up where we are headed."

A young woman wrote a poem after a late-night struggle with a high school English assignment. The poem went like this:

Although three hours it costed,

I’m still not Robert Frosted.

Change generally doesn’t come in three hours. It can. But generally it doesn’t. Change usually is the product of a life-long commitment.

III. IT IS A ROOM THAT IS NOT FINISHED IN THIS LIFE. Phil 3:14

A) Bob Villa can remodel an entire house in 30 minutes and never get dirty..but in real life it is not that easy.

B) Our entire life we press toward the mark of the high calling of Jesus Christ. That mark is perfection. One day we will reach it. But every day we are to strive for it.

To press means to run with greatest effort….this is not for salvation…this is what God has called us to strive toward----Then one day we will be called out.
