Encourage believers to serve God with passion and zeal, warning against the dangers of lukewarm faith.

Introduction

Good morning, church family! Today, we're going to turn our hearts towards the message given to the church in Laodicea as recorded in Revelation 3:14-16. This is a powerful passage that speaks directly to us today, reminding us of the importance of serving God with passion and zeal, the dangers of lukewarm faith, and the blessings that come from a passionate pursuit of God.

Let's read the Scripture together:

"And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation. I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth."

A Warning to Serve God with Zeal

The Laodicean Church, as depicted in the book of Revelation, serves as a stark warning to all believers about the dangers of lukewarm faith. It is a call to serve God with zeal, passion, and fervor. The city of Laodicea was known for its wealth, self-sufficiency, and its lukewarm water supply, which was neither hot nor cold. This lukewarm water was a perfect metaphor for the spiritual condition of the Laodicean Church.

Complacent in their faith: They were not on fire for God, nor were they completely cold or indifferent. Instead, they were lukewarm, indifferent, and apathetic. This lukewarmness is a dangerous state to be in, as it represents a state of spiritual stagnation and indifference. It is a state where one is not fully committed to God, but is also not completely turned away from Him.

God doesn’t like lukewarm: God, through the Apostle John, warns the Laodicean Church, and by extension us, that He would rather we be hot or cold, but because they were lukewarm, He was about to spit them out of His mouth. This is a strong and vivid image that underscores the severity of their spiritual condition. It is a call to action, a call to repentance, and a call to serve God with zeal and passion.

Serving with zeal definition: Serving God with zeal means to serve Him with enthusiasm, fervor, and intensity. It means to be on fire for God, to be passionate about our relationship with Him, and to be eager to do His will. It means to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. It means to be fully committed to God, to seek Him first in all things, and to strive to live a life that is pleasing to Him.

Actively involved in the work of the Kingdom: It means to be a witness for Christ, to share the gospel with others, to serve others in love, to pray without ceasing, to study and meditate on God's Word, and to worship God in spirit and in truth. It means to be a doer of the Word and not just a hearer.

Serving attitude: Serving God with zeal does not mean to serve Him out of obligation, guilt, or fear, but out of love, gratitude, and joy. It means to serve Him not in our own strength, but in the power of the Holy Spirit. It means to serve Him not for our own glory, but for His glory.

A wake-up call for all of us: It is a call to examine our hearts, to repent of our lukewarmness, and to rekindle our passion for God. It is a call to serve God with zeal, to be on fire for Him, and to be fully committed to Him.

The dangers are real and serious: Lukewarm faith can lead to spiritual stagnation, complacency, and indifference. It can cause us to lose our passion for God, to drift away from Him, and to become ineffective in our service for Him. It can make us vulnerable to temptation, deception, and spiritual attack. It can rob us of the joy, peace, and fulfillment that come from a vibrant relationship with God.

God desires our wholehearted devotion: He doesn't want our half-hearted compliance. He wants us to serve Him with zeal, passion, and fervor, not with apathy, indifference, or lukewarmness. He wants us to be on fire for Him, not lukewarm or cold.

The Dangers of Lukewarm Faith

When God says, "So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth," He is expressing His dissatisfaction with a faith that is indifferent or complacent ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
