Genesis 22:1-14 THE LAMB ON MOUNT MORIAH I. THE GREAT SAINT V. 1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. A. His Name - "Abraham". It means "Father of a multitude." When the Lord first called this man to follow Him, his name was "Abram". That name meant "Exalted Father." Yet, Abram was 75 years old and childless. As Abram began to follow the Lord, the Lord changed his name to "Abraham". When he had no children, his name was "Exalted Father". Now, he has one child and God calls him "Father of a Multitude." While he only had one son, the Lord promised him that he would have many more, "Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.", Gen. 17:5. Now Abraham has two sons. Ishmael, has already left the home, Gen. 21:9-21, and Isaac, the son of promise, who was born when Abraham was 99, is here. B. His Nature - Behold, here I am. Missionary Obedience Your dog is "all ear" Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. Here is a man who lives for the will of God. & is revered by Jew, Muslim & Christian. C. His Notability - and said unto him Abraham's Salvation was By Simple faith in the Word of the Lord, Gen. 15:5-6, "And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness." II. THE GREAT SACRIFICEV. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. A. V. 1 His Challenge - The Bible tells us that the Lord "tempted" Abraham. Abraham had waited for 25 years for Isaac to be born. Now, Isaac is somewhere around 15 or even older. He is the fulfillment of all the promises God ever made to Abraham, and yet the Lord asks Abraham to give him back to God. real faith is always tested! 1. He Cares - To show you that He can take care of you in the test. 2. He Calls - To show the world that He is worthy of faith. 3. He Controls - He does it to get glory for His name! B. His Cost -V. 2 Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, Notice the similarities between Isaac and the Lord Jesus. 1. Thy son - Isa. 9:6 - "unto us a son is given." 2. Thine only son - John 3:16 - "only begotten son" 3. Whom thou lovest - Matt. 17:5 - "this is My beloved Son." C. His Compliance - V. 3-4 Abraham never wavered! However, God was not deterred! He had already formulated a plan to pay the price for mankind. He knew what had to be done and He set out to do it,
Rom. 5:8. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. . D. His Confidence - V. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. Heb. 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. Psa. 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. III. THE GREAT SON 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; A. Isaac Is Working - and laid it upon Isaac his son; John 19:17. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. B. Isaac Is Wondering - V. 7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? C. Isaac Is Willing - V. 8-9 Notice the phrase "they went both of them together." Amos 3:3. Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Luke 22:42. Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 2 Cor 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. IV. THE GREAT SUBSTITUTEV. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. A. It's Provision - and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns
