Summary: The Lamb of God not only takes away the sin of this world but He takes away the fear of death, hopelessness, and despair.

John 1:29-42 The Lamb of God

1. “Behold the Lamb of God”

• John was baptizing in a place called Bethany, across the Jordan River, when some priests and Levites from Jerusalem arrived to question him.

• He told them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal” (John 1:26-27).

• That one who is coming is the lamb of God

2. The Bible told us The next day John introduces the Lamb of God

• The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (v. 29).

• The phrase “Lamb of God” brings to mind the time when God provided Abraham with an animal for sacrifice in place of his son Isaac (Genesis 22:8).

• “Lamb of God” made people think of the lamb that was regularly sacrificed as part of the Passover (Exodus 12:3).

• Why is Jesus the Lamb of God or How did John know Jesus was the lamb of God?

• John knew that Jesus was destined to be the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

• Jesus is the Lamb of God John said, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. … [He] is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. … And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Chosen One” (vv. 32-34).

3. John the Baptist baptized

• Some scholars believe John baptisms were conducted so that Jesus “might be revealed to Israel” (v. 31).

• Matthew tells us that “Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the River Jordan, confessing their sins” (3:5-6).

4. The Lamb of God says Come and See

• As John watched Jesus pass by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” (v. 36)

• John pointed people to Jesus and invite them to believe in him.

• This happened when he said to two of his disciples, “Look, here is the Lamb of God.” They heard John say this, and they immediately followed Jesus.

• In verse (v. 38). More than anything else, not only did they wanted to follow but they wanted to be in the presence of Jesus.

• They ask where are you staying he simply says “come and see”

• They responded by going to where he was staying “and they remained with him that day”

• “Come and see” is an invitation. When we invite people to join the worship and activities of our congregations, we invite them to come and see a place where the risen Lord is alive and well, a place where they can come face to face with Jesus.

5. The Lamb of God says, Follow Me

• More than anything else, the two disciples wanted to remain with Jesus, they wanted to follow Jesus

• Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. He was so excited to be with Jesus that he tracked his brother down and said, “We have found the Messiah,” the anointed one of God (v. 41).

• Andrew encouraged Simon to come and see Jesus, and he accepted the invitation. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” — the Aramaic word for “rock,” which is translated “Peter” (v. 42).

• Jesus decided to go to Galilee, and he said to his first disciples, “Follow me” (v. 43).

6. Our Mission is Like John’s Mission

• John’s mission Behold The Lamb of God

• Jesus mission become the Lamb of God

• Jesus mission is an invitation to Come and See

• Jesus mission is the invitation follow me

• Our mission is to invite people to encounter the Lamb of God
