Summary: Messianic Psalm – especially in His role (fulfilled at 2nd coming as the King).

I. THE REJECTION OF THE KING (v. 1-3)

A. His amazement at their response to the King (v. 1).

B. They plot against Him (v. 2) – “anointed” = Messiah.

1. Herod did when He killed the children.

2. Jewish rulers did to order His crucifixion.

3. Roman rulers worked with the Jewish rulers.

C. Their real problem – rebellion against His authority.

1. This is what motivates atheism, liberalism & evolution.

2. We will not have this man to ‘reign’ over us.

II. THE RETRIBUTION OF THE KING (v. 4-5)

A. He laughs (Ps 37:12-13, Ps 59:8, Pro 1:26). A testimony to the sovereignty & power of God.

B. He punishes (v. 5) – in the day he speaks in “wrath.” He now speaks in grace.

III. THE REIGNING OF THE KING (v. 6-9)

A. Yet – none of man’s opposition with in any way hinder the eternal plans of God. His day to reign as King will be during the millennium.

B. My King – the on holy hill of Zion. Jerusalem, esp. Temple mount.

C. Begotten ‘born, to spring forth from, to come from

1. Christ is called God’s only “begotten Son” a phrase used to distinguish Christ’s relationship to the Father as being different from other sons. God has many sons, but only one “begotten Son”

2. It speaks of His deity as coming directly from God.

D. This decree concerns a day in eternity – no specific time. This decree is applicable every time God wants to manifest to the world that Jesus is God’s Son:

1. Its application here is to the 2nd coming.

2. Its application in Acts 13:33 is to the resurrection.

3. Its application in Heb 1:5 is in contrast to angels.

4. Its application in Heb 5:5 is showing that this was the Father’s decree.

E. He will reign over the heathen (nations) and the uttermost parts of the earth (v. 8).

F. He will put down the rebellion with severity (v. 9).

IV. THE RIGHT RESPONSE TO THE KING (v. 10-12)

A. He charges the kings on how to live now in light of these warnings (v. 10)

B. Serve the LORD (Jehovah). Do not follow after false Gods, for they will not be your judge. If one is serving the Lord, he should rejoice. To serve the Lord is not a punishment but a privilege. But tremble at His greatness, don’t be flippant.

C. Kiss the Son. Pay homage. Bow before His as your rightful Lord – in opposition to those kings who seek to “break his bands asunder.”

1. To refuse is to perish from the way.

2. To trust in Him as the only God is to be blessed.

This is not yet the day of His physical kingdom, but it is the day of His spiritual kingdom in which Christ is to be ruling in the hearts of all believers: We too should be admonished:

• Not to rebel against our King.

• Serve the Lord with gladness – voluntarily.

• Worship Him as our King and Master.
