Summary: Two principal questions find answers in our text. First who is this promised King? And second, what kind of King is he?

No ear may hear His coming;

But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive Him still,

The dear Christ enters in.

And third, Jesus was eternally pre-existent. He was born on a certain calendar date in history, but “whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days” (5:2). Indeed, Jesus is eternally begotten of the Father. There never was a time when he did not exist, though he had a definite beginning as a human baby boy that night in Bethlehem. There is no re-incarnation in the Bible, but there is incarnation.

Jesus eternally existed, but one day he became flesh and blood.

II. What Kind of King Is He (5:3-5a)?

And second, what kind of king is he?

For one thing, this King will provide for his flock. Some translations focus on the feeding of the flock. The ESV and others translate the term more broadly: “And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord” (5:4a). This is a wonderful picture of King Jesus taking care of those who belong to him.

Also, he will protect his people. Micah says, “And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace” (5:4b). God’s people will be secure because they are under the control of the Prince of Peace. It’s one thing to be a peace officer; it’s so much more to be peace personified.

In addition, he will purge his kingdom of all material trusts and root out false religions. In Micah’s day, nations trusted in chariots and horses and fortified cities. The Messiah promised to end all that.

When Jesus came 2,000 years ago he brought spiritual peace to all who received him and believed on his name.

And just as surely as every one of the almost 300 prophecies came true regarding Jesus’ first coming, so every one of almost 200 prophecies will come true when Jesus comes back again. And when he does he will rule and reign in power and glory forever and ever.

Conclusion

Do you see Jesus Christ as God’s promised King and Messiah? Do you anticipate eagerly his return to earth in glory? If you have not already done so, let this message of the coming King call your heart to accept him now as your own Savior. Amen.
