This sermon explores the hope, salvation, and stability brought by Jesus's birth, encouraging us to let this Christmas message transform our lives daily.
Good morning, beloved family of God. It is indeed a joy to gather together in His presence, to sit under the grace-filled canopy of His word, and to allow His truth to wash over us, renewing our minds and refreshing our spirits. As we gather around the warmth of God's word today, we are turning our hearts towards the radiant story of our Savior's birth.
In the words of the esteemed theologian, J.I. Packer, "The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity–hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory–because at the Father's will Jesus Christ became poor and was born in a stable so that thirty years later He might hang on a cross." This quote beautifully encapsulates the profound truth that we will be focusing on today.
Let us now turn our attention to the word of God, as found in Luke 2:1-14 [read text]. This is the word of the Lord.
Let us bow our heads in prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who was born in a manger to bring hope to a ruined humanity. As we delve into Your word today, we pray that You would open our hearts and minds to receive the truths that You have for us. Illuminate our understanding, and help us to apply these truths to our lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Today, we will be focusing on three main points: the security found in the Savior's birth, the salvation brought by the Baby Jesus, and the stability that comes from the story of Christmas. As we examine these truths, may our hearts be stirred with wonder, gratitude, and a renewed sense of purpose. May the hope of Christmas fill our hearts, not just today, but every day of our lives.
When we consider the circumstances surrounding the birth of Jesus, we find a profound sense of security. This security is not the kind that the world offers, which is often fleeting and dependent on external circumstances. Instead, it is a security that is anchored in the unchanging character of God and His unfailing promises.
The birth of Jesus took place in a humble stable, far removed from the grandeur and comfort of a palace. This was not a coincidence or a result of poor planning. It was a deliberate act of God, designed to demonstrate that our security does not lie in our material possessions or social status. The Savior of the world was born in the most humble of circumstances, showing us that our true security is found in Him alone.
In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty of the world, the birth of Jesus brings a sense of calm and assurance. When the angels announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds, they declared, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." This announcement was not just good news for the shepherds but for all of humanity. It was a proclamation of hope and security for a world in desperate need.
The birth of Jesus also brings security because it fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament. Hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah foretold His coming, saying, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14). The fulfillment of this prophecy in the birth of Jesus assures us that God is faithful to His promises. We can trust in His word and find security in His faithfulness.
Moreover, the birth of Jesus signifies the beginning of God's redemptive plan for humanity. The angel declared to the shepherds, "Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." The birth of Jesus marked the dawn of a new era, where salvation was made available to all who would believe in Him. This brings us a sense of security, knowing that our salvation is not dependent on our works or efforts, but on the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Transition. Jesus brings us a profound sense of security because His birth reminds us that our security is not found in our circumstances but in the unchanging character of God and His unfailing promises. It assures us of God's faithfulness and His redemptive plan for humanity. As we reflect on the birth of Jesus, may we find a renewed sense of security in Him.
