A festive celebration of the birth of Jesus, as observed by Christians worldwide.
A. The Birth of a King (Prince George)
The birth of Prince George, the firstborn son of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, captured the attention of the world. The media frenzy surrounding this event was unprecedented, with reporters scrambling to gather any news about the royal baby. The birth of a future king is a highly formal and ceremonial affair, steeped in tradition and pageantry.
B. The Birth of the King of Kings
In contrast, the birth of Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, was a humble and unassuming event. Jesus was born to a peasant couple, far away from their home in Bethlehem. His birth took place in a stable, without any fanfare or immediate global attention.
C. Comparing the Announcements
The announcement of Prince George's birth followed royal tradition, with a formal announcement made to Queen Elizabeth and displayed on an easel at Buckingham Palace. On the other hand, angels appeared to shepherds near Bethlehem to announce the birth of Jesus.
Christians often have conflicting views about Christmas. Some argue that it is not a religious holiday and criticize its commercialization, while still observing the traditions associated with it. Others claim that Christmas has pagan roots and question its Christian origins, yet continue to celebrate it. Some believe that Christ's birth should be celebrated every day, but few actually do so.
The Bible provides us with a beautiful account of Joseph and Mary's journey and the celebration of Jesus' birth. Mary, visited by the angel Gabriel, was told that she would give birth to the Son of the Most High. She rejoiced in this honor and recognized the significance of her role in God's plan.
Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem for a census, but there was no room for them in the inn. Jesus was born in a humble stable, and the news of his birth was announced by angels to shepherds in the fields. Wise men from the east also followed a star to find the newborn king and presented him with gifts.
The Bible does not specifically command Christians to celebrate Christ's birth, but it does show the shepherds and wise men celebrating and worshiping him. Therefore, Christians have the freedom to commemorate Jesus' birth as they see fit, without feeling guilty or pressured by others' opinions.
The various traditions associated with Christmas, such as decorating trees, exchanging gifts, and enjoying festive meals, should not be seen as pagan or improper forms of worship. These customs hold different meanings for different people, and as long as they are not rooted in pagan worship, Christians can participate in them without compromising their faith.
Christmas is a time to celebrate and honor the greatest gift of all – God's love for the world, demonstrated through the birth of Jesus. While the actual date of Jesus' birth is unknown, December serves as a convenient time to remember and appreciate this significant event. As we enjoy the season, let us keep Jesus at the center of our celebrations and express our gratitude for God's ultimate gift to humanity.
Enjoy the Christmas season, remembering the incarnation of deity in the form of Jesus.
