Explores the joy of Mary, magnification of Jesus, and the salvation message in Christ's birth, emphasizing hope and transformation through understanding God's Word.

Introduction

Greetings, beloved family of God, and welcome to this blessed gathering where we come together, not as mere individuals, but as a collective body of Christ. We are here, united in purpose and spirit, to celebrate, cherish and comprehend the divine words of our Lord. Today, we stand on the precipice of an awe-inspiring revelation, ready to embrace the profound wisdom that our gracious Father has in store for us.

We find ourselves today in the heart of the Holy Scripture, in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 1, verses 46 through 56, and in Psalm 98, verses 1 through 3. Let us listen attentively to the Word of God:

And Mary said, 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.' And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

'O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.'

Our sermon today is a beacon in the wilderness, a lighthouse guiding us towards the divine truth of God's Word. We will be focusing on three main points: Magnifying the Messiah, Manifestation of Mary's Joy, and Message of Salvation through the Christ Child. These points are not merely topics of discussion, but are life-changing truths that have the power to transform our lives, our understanding, and our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

J.I. Packer once wrote, 'The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity - hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory - because at the Father's will Jesus became poor, and was born in a stable so that thirty years later He might hang on a cross.'

As we embark on this enlightening endeavor, let's bow our heads in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word, the living testimony of your love and mercy. As we reflect on the messages hidden within these verses, we pray for wisdom, understanding, and an open heart. May your Word illuminate our path, and may we always find joy in your presence. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Magnifying the Messiah

In the heart of the Gospel, we find Mary, a young woman chosen by God, responding to the divine revelation with a song of praise. Her soul, she declares, magnifies the Lord. This is not a casual statement, but a profound declaration of her faith and her role in God's grand narrative. To magnify something means to make it appear larger than it is, especially when viewed through a lens. Mary, in essence, is saying that her soul, her very being, is a lens through which the greatness of God is magnified, made more visible, and more glorious.

Mary's song, the Magnificat: It’s a beautiful expression of her faith. It is a testament to her understanding of God's character and His plan for humanity. She recognizes that God is not distant or detached, but intimately involved in the affairs of His creation. He is a God who looks upon the humble and exalts them, a God who fills the hungry with good things, and a God who remembers His promises and shows mercy from generation to generation.

This understanding is not born out of a vacuum: It is a reflection of her knowledge of the Scriptures and her personal experience with God. She has seen God's hand at work in her own life, in her own humble circumstances, and she has chosen to magnify Him, to make His greatness known through her life. This is a challenge for us today. Like Mary, we are called to magnify the Lord in our lives, to make His greatness known through our words, our actions, and our attitudes.

Her understanding of God's plan for salvation: She recognizes that God's plan is not just about her, but about the entire nation of Israel and ultimately, the whole world. She understands that the child she carries is the promised Messiah, the one through whom God will fulfill His promises and bring salvation to His people. This understanding fills her with joy and leads her to magnify the Lord.

A deep-seated joy rooted in her faith in God: It is a joy that comes from knowing that God is faithful, that He keeps His promises, and that He is actively working out His plan of salvation. This joy is not dependent on her circumstances, but on her relationship with God. It is a joy that sustains her through the challenges and uncertainties of life.

A song of hope: It is a song that looks forward to the fulfillment of God's promises, to the coming of the Messiah, and to the salvation that He will bring. It is a song that anticipates the future with confidence, not because of what she can do, but because of what God has promised to do. This hope is not a wishful thinking, but a confident expectation based on the character and promises of God.
