Summary: Blowing wind, tongues of fire, and people suddenly becoming bilingual.

God Is …

The Holy Spirit Poured Out

May 8, 2022

Acts 2:1-4 NIV

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

Blowing wind, tongues of fire, and people suddenly becoming bilingual.

Acts 2:15-18 NIV

These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

Why should we welcome the Holy Spirit into our lives?

So we can think what God thinks.

John 16:13 (NIV)

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

Have you ever said, “That’s impossible!” or “We can’t do it!” or “It’s never going to change!”

Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

So we can want what God wants.

Psalms 37:4 (NIV)

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Philippians 2:13 (NLT)

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.”

The Holy Spirit changes our “wanter” – the desires of our heart.

So we can love what God loves.

1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

Rescue story from my mom.

The Holy Spirit provides us with something to give away.

The Holy Spirit heals through us.
