THE HOLY SPIRIT AS THE BIBLE EXPOSITOR
TEXT: 2 CORINTHIANS 6:16, EZEKIEL 36:27
It is true that the expositor of scripture must be well trained in the technical obligation of preaching, but he must also be well aware that his technical abilities will act as dead, dry cables if not connected to the power of the Holy Spirit.
Roles of the Holy Spirit as the bible expositor
* Revelation and inspiration: 2 Peter 1:20-21. The Holy Spirit moved in the inspiration of scriptures as the divine author. We cannot expound spiritually-revealed scripture apart from the working power of the one who gave the scripture.
* Illumination of the Holy Spirit. The bible is not human wisdom and thus the expositor must be illuminated beyond human thinking, the spiritual eyes must be opened to see and comprehend the meaning of the word of God.
* The Holy Spirit convicts: John 16:8; 13. The Holy Spirit makes the preacher and the listener try to align their lives with the purpose of the Holy Spirit in giving out the word. He has the right language and authority over the scriptures.
* The Holy Spirit communicates with the hearers: 1 Thessalonians 1:5
* The exposition of scriptures requires both spiritual understanding and unction. The authority which the believer has in his message, does not reside within him. The Spirit, through truth, enables the preacher.
HOW TO BE USED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT IN EXPOSITION
* Humble yourself before the Lord God – Isaiah 66:1-2
* Be a learner – Matthew 11:28-29
* Hunger for God’s word – 1 Peter 2:1-3, Acts 17:11
* Grow in grace and knowledge – 2 Peter 3:18
CONCLUSION – Preaching and teaching of the word of God, is more than a technical experience. It is a spiritual encounter that can be done with the help of the Holy Spirit.
