THE GREAT THINGS OF GOD
I Chron.16:23-29: II Sam.7:18-24
1. Muhammad Ali was identified by his self evaluation, “I am the greatest!”
2. Tony the Tiger declares it of frosted fakes “They’re GREAT!”
3. We sing, “How Great Thou Art”
4. We teach our children to say, God is great, God is good…
5. We use the word to describe extraordinary acts, events, places, and things
6. Great - Heb.= abundant (in quantity, size, age, number, rank, quality)
Gk.= 2 words, megas, (Heb.74:14) and Polus (Eph.2:4)
7. Everything about God is Great His: Principles, Power, Promises, Peace,
Provisions, Position, Purpose, and Pardon
I OUR GOD IS GREAT
A. Moses said He is Great
(Deu 10:17) For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
B. David said He is Great
(1 Chr 16:25) For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.
(Psa 47:2) For the LORD most high is terrible; he is
a great King over all the earth
C. Job said He is Great
(Job 36:26) Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
D. The Sons of Korah said He is Great
(Psa 48:1) A Song and Psalm for the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.
E. Paul said He is Great
(Titus 2:13) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
II GOD HAS DONE GREAT THINGS
A. Job spoke of the Great Things of God
(Job 5:8-9) I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: {9} Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
(Job 9:10) Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
(Job 37:5) God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.
B. The Psalmist spoke of the Great Things of God
(Psa 71:19) Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
C. The Babylonian Captives spoke of the Great Things of God
(Psa 126:2-3) Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. {3} The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.
D. The Prophet Joel spoke of the Great Things of God
(Joel 2:21) Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.
E. Mary spoke of the Great Things of God
(Luke 1:49) For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
F. Moses spoke of the Great Things of God
(Deu 10:21) He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.
G. Samuel spoke of the Great Things of God
(1 Sam 12:24) Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he hath done for you.
H. The Maniac of Gadara experienced and told of the Great Things of God
(Mk.5:19-20) Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
I. Jeremiah tells us that God will do Great Things when we Pray
(Jer 33:3) Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
J. How Sad to Think Israel Forgot the Great Things God did for they
(Psa 106:21) They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;
III HIS MERCY IS GREAT
A. Moses
(Num 14:18) The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
B. David
(1 Chr 21:13) And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
(Psa 145:8) The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
(Psa 119:156) Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments.
